Title: "SKS Paratrooper Navy Arms type 84 Very Rare" GB Listing
Post by: owenj492 on February 03, 2020, 09:50:46 PM
This looks like some kind of homemade/Frankenstein thing to me:

Seems fake, anyone ever seen anything like this?

I sent a message to the seller requesting more pictures.

What I see on that one vs. my Type 84, they look alot alike.  What parts and pieces look Frankenstein??

The stock strike out of the old then the "2879" replacement numbers look consistent with Chinese.  A 1968 starting point for the original action.  More pictures would be nice as well as the importer mark, which would probably nail it.  Bolt carrier has a lightening cut.  On the whole with the info presented,  I see what could be a Type 84, but I'm not an expert on them.  GM, having one, should be a better judge.

They were built out of older rifles.. one dead giveaway is the button in the bolt to lock it back, this is the only rifle that was modified in that way, also they are the only paratrooper to have high cap mag, bayonet and short barrel... so when looked at with a D or an M model they look odd.
See this, there are some decent photos...Photophuckit screwed up my old Type 84 post.

GM, thanks for that.  I must have missed the bolt hold back description in prior threads thumb1.  I didn't see how the mags were modified and I wonder if the one on GB has the correct mag, though he says it comes with four.

Now that you linked that past thread, I can also see the"A" frame mag release on the GB weapon.  Thanks for the tutorial.

It does have the correct Navy Arms import stamp and you can see the top of the bolt hold open button.

Here is a few shots of mine..Draw you own conclusions..but, I'd say that is a legit Type 84. The fit and finish aren't by any means great compared to some commercial variations. Mine was built from scrubbed and reserialized parts, even the top cover is not serialized, factories and serials can be all over the spectrum. The magazines are just slightly modified standard AK magazines, the modifications were to the latch tang and some slight mod to the feed lips area, I trial fit the Type 84 mag in one of my MAK90s, it fit and latched, I didn't test function.

Thank you very much for the additional pictures, ClemsonTigerz, and welcome aboard the site from a Kentuckian!!  Though you're parting with this one, we're glad to have you here.  I'm sure one of us here will try to snatch that fine weapon up whistle12.

Thanks for the invite Bacarnal!!! It is a beautiful weapon. Zero rust and shiny bore.  I have a soft spot for all SKS as I have had many over the years.  I am torn about this one but circumstances arise and new  toys present themselves  ::) ::)

When I got this rifle all it had was the first magazine on the left...a beat up old Hungarian AK mag. It clicks in flawlessly and is dead ass reliable. I kinda like the looks of that battle worn mag the most too. I have since modified 3 chinese mags to fit. Im guessing they function. I never really shoot this gun. I just like looking at it.

A man after my own heart. I never shoot my SKSs anymore either, just not enough hours in the day.  Just pull one out of the safe from time to time and ogle, then back in she goes. Blicero used to call us types rifle ‘lickers’.  :P
