It’ll be interesting to see what you find. Regardless, it’s a decent price for an early Type 56 these days.

Nice thumb1. Was able to pull it up with advanced search and look it over.  I especially like the serial number.  A great deal!!!  Let us know what she looks like when she gets to you.

I did an advanced search on GB using the sellers name and completed auction option.  A little over 7000 from the one I just picked up.
Jesse, looks like yours is a nice weapon and should clean up well.  Coming out of NC from where it did, might have been brought back by a Jarhead from VN. Nice catch thumb1.

That's pretty sweet Jesse. I've got an undocumented bring back. The vets widow said he brought it back from "over there" and just wanted it gone. For a C note I obliged her. PAX

I may be mistaken, but believe this rifle was discussed some months ago. If this is the rifle I am thinking of there may have been some questions regarding the uncommon finish.

I forgot to say:

For a standard surplus sks you got a great deal.

The non-import stamp is just icing on the cake.

Nice catch, and congrats! thumb1

You did get lucky, sometimes people don't bid on great deals on GB, couple years ago I won a SKS Cowboy Companion with it's original type 89 scope mount in a plastic stock for $445, still have it, but I found the correct stock and handguard for it also.

It happens.

I imagine there's a bit of Type56 fatigue with all of the recent imports. And possibly a bit of post-Christmas bank account fatigue. Couple those with a lot of folks not knowing what they're passing up when they come across it. And also a bit of luck.

I've had similar luck a few times. The best being an all matching 1969 Albanian, that I acquired with an opening bid of $599.

That scope mount alone is worth the $445. They are rare find.

Are you aware of how many chemicals those gloves contain that you are absorbing while you are wearing them?  Are you from Comiefornia where everything there causes cancer?

In some pictures the metal is white, in others they're nicely blued. Are you stripping all that loveliness down to bare metal?

I think that stock is awesome! Great grain and nicely 'used'!

thanks man. Yeah it just the lighting the blueing is nice under the stock line and under the hand guard. The rest is definitely weathered but its there. I would never strip anything cleaned and oiled her up a bit

I've noticed the dark and light colors on several worn covers I've seen now, including this one.  It looks like the front and back are annealed (hence the darker color) like they did with the back of the M1 Garand receivers at one point.  Possibly the tempering process made the covers hard, but they wanted either end to be more ductile, so they dunked the ends in lead to draw the temper back.  Interesting.  Nice weapon with good character.  Cheers, Bruce.

Kalashnikov variant cleaning kit?

That's what I was thinking.

The guys over on the AKFiles would likely ID it fairly quickly.

Years ago when they were selling these kits for a buck apiece I bought quite a few along with about 100 stripper clips. No research done by me but mine look like this one and were sold as AK cleaning kits - for whatever that's worth. The only real difference I see is the cap. The AK style has dimples to retain it like this one does, the pictures of the SKS style I've seen have legs. The tools inside are the same as what is shown here. As for a year of manufacture...I've got no idea. As for what firearms which one is supposed to be paired with..I have no idea.

The legged style cap is obviously designed to latch on to pins when it's used to center the cleaning rod, these are designed to just slip loosely over the muzzle. I used a carbon fiber cleaning rod so I've never used the cap.

Looks like a nice acquisition for $349.00, JesseSks. And no import stamp? Pretty cool. Some of the pics had me thinking parkerizing at first but I think that was camera flash or lighting after I saw the whole post.

Thanks for posting your 1962 Type 56 SKS! I have a '63 that I like a lot. They're nice rifles, for sure.

How is it that you and Bruce (Bacarnal) both recently bought 7Mil Type 56's with no import stamps? Pretty lucky!

*Edit: I was going to agree that your cleaning kit reminded me of an AK-style kit, too.

Possibly a lot of the 62 production went to the NVA or the Viet Cong.  Right after the Soviet Sino Split, so maybe the ChiComs were trying to show how good their rifles were in relation to what the USSR was providing.  A lot of rivalries going on at that time.
Another thing could be that since the "new" Type 63 was coming in, they felt the older design could be forwarded to Vietnam.   All this is speculation, trying to picture the political climate at the time.  Cheers, Bruce.
