Title: Pawnshop Find *Updated with Pics
Post by: ahedgpe on January 12, 2020, 09:50:50 AM
I was on break Friday and stopped by a pawnshop in my area. Found a factory /26\ in fantastic condition. Can't remember if it was 11 or 12 million serial. All numbers matched, bore shiney, and had a /2\ stamped in the wood under the left side of the receiver. It actually looked like the one bob_the_student posted recently, only the wood on this one is a little bit darker and I think the sling swivel was on the side.

The only thing that I saw on this one was that the bayonet did not lock up tight in the closed position. It hung down about 1/4 inch. They were asking $375. I'm probably going back tomorrow and offering 350.  While I'm at the store, is there anything I can inspect on the bayonet or collar to make sure it's not a bigger issue?

If it’s 11 or 12 million it should have a spike bayonet with a long wide shallow inlet in the stock for the bayonet. If the bayonet was installed incorrectly (flat side up when folded is wrong) then it won’t fit into the notched ferrule on the stock foreend correctly and will “hang down”.

There are electropenciled numbers on the gas piston and gas tube, as well as a stamped number on the bolt that cannot be observed unless the shop allows you to do a partial field strip.

A side mounted sling swivel on an 11mil or 12mil carbine is an indication of a non matching, non-original stock-- which could explain  the drooping bayonet. Spike bayonets don't pair well with stocks cut for blade bayonets and vice versa.

Or it could be a 1.5mil or 1.6mil carbine with a side mounted rear swivel. In which case, 375 is a great price, imho.

I could be wrong about the side mounted swivel, I was in somewhat of a hurry.  Ill be back there tomorrow with more time to inspect!

I also think $375 is great price if in nice shape.

Went back today to check it out. All numbers do match. It's a 10mil serial factory 26. Stock shows no signs of sanding, etc. Stock has a triangle with an 8 inside of it (not a 2 like I thought). Bayonet groove in the stock is the correct wider type for a non blade. Also, it does have a side swivel for the sling. Some cosmo in the bolt and carrier areas to. The bayonet doesn't droop as much as I thought, maybe 1/8th inch.

Sounds good!

In 1965 Jianshe Arsenal transitioned from side swivels back to bottom swivels so either is correct on your 10 million.

I'm also a huge history buff and the history of these things is always part of the fun. My dad was in Vietnam  '64-'66 (Marines). I know this one wasn't there, but still a cool piece of history from the same time period.

Sounds like you got a good deal at $337.00. I'd be happy to pick up an all matching 10 million for that. Looking forward to seeing pics when you bring it home!

Pics added to first post.  Picked it up today and broke it down to clean the cosmo out of it.  I also included some pics of the bayonet "droop".  Any suggestions?

A fine looking weapon at a great price!! To be honest, I'm not seeing much of a "droop" in the bayonet.  I am seeing it in contact with the cleaning rod and that springs it down a bit, but I'm under the impression that is proper since that ads tension to the cleaning rod, helping to hold it in.   If you look at some of the "neutered" bayonet lugs on SKS's brought in after the ASW, they have a spring loaded ball added to the chopped lug that puts pressure on the cleaning rod so it doesn't fall out.  Cheers, Bruce.

That's a beauty!! As far as the bayonet I don't think it's bad.  Did you try adjusting the bayonet screw? Maybe back it all the way out and reinstall? Only other thought is that the stock or stock ferrule is stopping it from closing all the way, my thought anyway. Good luck!

It's only about 1/8th inch. My other Chinese sks had a tight lockup when the bayonet is closed. I can push this one up into the stock with no resistance. Doesn't hit on the stock or ferrule. I believe the screw is still staked as I can't turn it.

Oh, in all my cleaning, I forgot that it came with this Chinese sling. Any way to tell if it's correct for that period?

I took off the bayonet tonight and looked for any grooves on the lug or anything that would prevent it from locking up tight.  I also tried a new spring, but no difference.

I then turned the bayonet 180 degrees (upside down) and it locked up tight.  So that would seem to rule out the lug and collar from being the culprit?

The sling is good to go. Nice that it has markings on it.

I don’t see any issues with your bayonet. It looks like a good enough fit to me.
