Surprisingly, I won this on a "throw away bid" 10 days ago and it arrived yesterday. When I examined the auction listing, the stock looked sanded and redone, and the description read as shown below. But what attracted me was the serial number and "the look".

I guess the description scared a few people off but it was as simple a fix as it sounded. The last person to take it apart had put the recoil spring in the wrong way and it had spontaneously disassembled. Put it back together and it functions great.
For the price, plus shipping, that also included one single-stack 5 round AK mag, one double-stack 5 round AK mag, an AK74 type muzzle brake of unknown manufacturer (no markings), and a weird China star thingy of unknown (to me) function, it was worth the gamble.

Quite a few interesting features to me. It's cool that it's a first quarter of 1964 production with pre-transitional features: blade bayonet and long-lug threaded barrel. It has a staked bayonet that has that partial Russian gold finish.
No import marks, no signs of scrubbing one, and it has "the look", so a likely Vietnam bringback. If the veteran or some subsequent owner did a shellac recoat, then it was a long time ago, with no finish in the missing slide swivel inlet, flakes coming off in a few places, worn off at the cheek weld area, etc. It has a few spots of active rust on the gas piston and barrel but minimal. The bore was dirty as heck with scattered small rough spots, e.g., near the gas port, but otherwise shiny chrome.

That is a very nice SKS, a huge win for the price!
Well heck, for the price you bought it for, you made out like a bandit! thumb1 That china star thingy is an adapter to allow you to load the ak mags with ammo from stripper clips if I remember correctly. I may still have one hiding out in my stash some where. If you are wanting a rear sling loop/ring/retainer for the side rear of the stock, I have one including the screws and can hook you up with it real cheap! I am talking about $5 for it and the screws shipped to you. Just message me and let me know it you want it.
what a great buy, all numbers look matching (is a plus to me). thumb1 i'm so jealous. bat1

Thanks for the info and the offer. I tried a stripper clip and it didn’t quite fit but I had not pushed it over an AK mag. Maybe a little spreading induced by mounting it on a mag will do it.
PM sent.

Thanks Carl! :)
Yup, the numbers match. I’ll definitely shoot it and see if I can remove those few rough patches with a few rounds down the pipe.
What a great find! And at a really sweet price. I didn't know single stack 5 round magazines were a thing, that's a cool little extra to have thrown in with the purchase.
My favorite part of this purchase is the "easy fix," aspect. I love seeing an item that someone has tossed aside being given a new life by someone who knows what they're doing.

P32, Very nice, extremely nice, fabulous!!! (You're in for the Dec "I hate you" award, I see bat1). How often do you hit pay dirt on the site? Since GB's new format and their attitude is getting annoying I'm looking for other options. Great find!

rofl I’d like to thank the academy for this honor...
This was an online auction house, not GunBroker. I get about 80-90% of my C&R items off of those auctions.
What a deal for that price! And to be able to correctly install the return spring to "fix" the problem! Wow! You had to be grinning ear to ear when that became a reality! Congrats and hats off to you!
Yeah, that's a AK magazine loader that was marketed. I have one myself but I've always used my Isreali-made "Lula" AK mag loader, so I don't know how well they work.
That's probably one of the Romak single stack mags. You should be able to use it for trade fodder or sell it easy enough.

Good eye P32. clap1
Hey Phos, I can use the other stuff if you feel like selling it off.
And......Congratulations on the great score!

Thanks FC! Thanks for the affirm on the mag loader and the likely origin of the single stacker, Romanian was my suspicion too, given their single stack as exported builds, converted by the monkeys, er experts, at CAI to double stack wells. I've accidentally become an AK mag collector with quite a few oddballs in the bin.

Thanks! Yes, sometimes the gamble pays off, although it's not much of a gamble with the SKS; it's so robust that you really have to try hard to break it...well, excluding Bubba armed with his torch and Dremel of course rofl

I'm undecided on the spare bits. I also "AK" so they are useful to me. I'm most curious about the AK 74 style muzzle brake. It has top ports to fight muzzle climb as well as the modest expansion chamber and forward angled ports to reduce felt recoil. I need to try it on one of my AKs.
I'll PM you first if I decide to move one or more of the items thumb1

Copy that.
Mainly I want that 5 round AK mag.
Make sure that brake is the right size for your AK. I have one on one of mine and I like it a lot. That mag charger can be a lot of help if it's one of the older ones, they work great! The newer production, not so much.....
Larry, good words of caution. I’d checked, and the brake threads onto my WASR-10 correctly and the opening is definitely for 7.62, not 5.45, as the exit hole is a larger diameter than the neck of a 7.62x39 cartridge.

Outstanding.
I can see that being a real bad day if it was screwed onto the wrong barrel...... :o
Okay, you guys have me wondering now. Did someone actually manufacture a 14x1mm LH threaded 5.45 caliber muzzle brake? I can't say it didn't happen because of the world we live in, but, why? All my 5.45 stuff is 24mm thread. I have a few 14x1mm LH brakes in my box-o-stuff I gotta check now!
Thanks for the heads-up!

Might be a US made part.
That could come in handy.
