Title: The ?5 triangle 0406b - Data Collection - again
Post by: Matchka on January 18, 2019, 08:11:59 PM
Picking up on Power Surge's original post back in 2014 that left off last year. I read the five pages of superb discussion & RM's updates. Here's my ?5 for the list.

That's a beautiful gun Matchka!  Is it a short barrel lug?  They transitioned to pinned barrels between year 15 and 16 I believe.  thumb1

Thanks, Worm!
RM, pics to follow. Also, I'm just about done with my re-inventory of types and sernos. My eyes are getting twisted interpreting light stamps! Threes that turn out to be eights, stuff like that. Ugh.

Ain't no doubt about it! Also, check out the "dimple" on the right side of the barrel. Similar to the one on my 9186. Extra pics for continuity.

That's a really nice example of a well-preserved Type 56, regardless of arsenal stamps, Matchka!

There's always something about the one-piece Gas Tube that just makes a Type 56 look great, IMO. The good looking grain on this stock, (as opposed to the normal bland Chu wood with little standout grain), the rich blue finish, and lack of any major dings and scratches, would make this a great part of anybody's inventory. Thanks for posting it up!

BTW, great pics too! That's something I still have a ways to go on, just yet.

This is the second one someone has posted with a "dimple"  Looking at the dimple on the barrel... maybe my theory is right.....maybe it's totally wrong.. but what good is having a theory if it doesn't come out?  :)

I think its a proof stamp...a carry over. Why.. do I think that...

The K stamp on the barrel.  Well GM, whats a fricken K, got to do with a dimple..think1

Well, I will tell you young butterfly..

Look at most early Chinese rifles.. SKS and Type 53s, Russian SKSs and Russian Mosins, Romanian SKSs, Mosins and the M1969 trainer..maybe even a few other Communist weapons of the era, at least ones Russia had pretty much direct influence over.. The exceptions to this would be the Czechs, Yugoslavia and Albania, they wouldn't due to their crappy Cold War relationship with Russia. Typically the 2 stamps all of those, early China, Romania and Russia all share is a (K) or circle K and a (o) a circle O stamp. These are both very well documented Russian Mosin stamps.. Now, depending on the weapon, these said 2 marks could be either on the receiver or on the barrel shank, the barrel shank being the most common location.. all one has to do is look.

One other I haven't verified the 2 marks on is a Bulgarian M44.. I ain't got one. :)

Just one dimple.. I could let go and say..I don't know..maybe someone dropped it at the factory, got stupid with an assembly machine... two dimples starts to raise a little curiousity....  cause I'm sure the guy who dropped the first one or screwed it up...well I'm sure he wouldn't dare do that again.. bat1 :o

What all that gibberish above boils down too...is I think the dimple is possibly remnants or a mis-stamping of the (o) stamp.

Thats my thoughts...Like I said.. who knows... wrong is what I do right.....and maybe, it's just an ancient Chinese secret.. ::)

Dammit, RM. Now I'm inclined to pull out every one of my 56's and do a dimple check. Two of these, in practically the same spot, if I find another one...   yahoo1

Yeah...uhm......errr........ RM..  :)

You shouldn't make someone pull everything out and look for (o) .......dimples.  rofl rofl2

Don't you go blaming this on me GM  GM...RM, just a single letter's difference there.   hunter)

You may very well be onto something though.  The older carbines have what I've always called 'delta stamp' in that exact spot on the receiver round.  Sometimes the stamping was pretty poor and you can't even tell what it was:

Definitely a delta though, and pretty consistent, I can find it or some remnants of it on darn near every gun I look at:

That stamp disappeared right around the letter series guns I believe...maybe it reappeared in a different form later on?

Woops, never-mind.  You guys are talking dimple on the right barrel lug.  I was thinking left receiver round like the (9186) example.

This is something totally different, likely the (o) stamp maybe?

Very nice rifle!

IMO, these are some of the nicest build, and best shooting, SKS' ever made. Quality is right up there with 24mil Jianshe.
