This is indeed cool Joe, thanks for posting! Now we might better understand how some of those fine looking Russian carbines got a few of their dings and scratches!! ;)

Really neat photos Joe, thanks.
Off and on for days I have searched the internet trying to find photos of Russian troops using the SKS in Berlin in 1945. I have read it was fielded and tested in this battle, is there anything to this or am I wasting my time?!

Danny it's urban legend (internet story). The story goes as the Russians were pushing the Nazis out of the small country of Belarus. Simonov sent some prototypes to the front and the rifle was a big hit with troops. There are no facts to substantiate the story.
8)...........................Joe
There were a number of prototypes that resembled an sks.
But the one supposedly listed in a Russian publication as being a "1944 sks prototype" is this one. If they were prototype in 1944, I doubt they saw action in 1955 especially in the configuration we know so well. The design may have been approved in 1945, but this does not prove the final product was being mass produced in 1945. For instance, why have we never seen a 45-48 sks?

Joe, late last night I came to that conclusion also! I looked at hundreds of photos and articles on the subject but as you say it appears to be just an "internet story". I found nothing.
Cannon I did run across these photos also and wondered IF maybe someone did see an "SKS" during the battle for Berlin in 1945 could either one of these have been the weapon they saw? Of course at the time they would not have known it as a Russian SKS as we know them today.
But one must admit these two carbines are shockingly close in appearance to our favorite carbine. Too close it would seem to me to not be the "father" or forerunner of the SKS!
But, as Joe said..."There are no facts to substantiate the story."

Looks like they may have been at the intersection of the M03 and the H20, about 6 km east of Slovyensk. Must have been taken quite a while ago since the fighting is now centered on Donetsk.
An impressive rifle, but they may find themselves at a disadvantage relative to the M47 Dragon :))
