Title: Sauer and Sohn Mod 38 with The E/37 Stamp
Post by: Donp236 on July 26, 2017, 11:01:35 AM
This gun completes my collection Sauer pistols (not considering the Behorden or the boxed unobtainium Sauers)  This one is a standard military Sauer model 38.  This is not a 38H because it has no thumb safety, only a cocker/decocker lever. The gun is stamped with the Eagle /37 which was the code for Waffenampt inspector at the Sauer and Son plant in Suhl Germany.  The cracked grip is the result less Bakelite and more bitumen and coal tar add to compensate.  Making the 1a grips subject to becoming more brittle with age.  The gun was made in early March 1945, about one month before the plant was captured by the US Army, 11th Armored Division.

Nice catch.  One of the lesser known variants of the era.

For context, here is a pic of the safety before it was eliminated (Mod 38H).

Martin 08 The Model 38 began full production in November 1938 but wasn't accepted by the OKH because it didn't have the external safety.  The 38H began production in July of 1939 and both the Model 38 and the 38H were produced side by side at the same time. The external safety was not an elimination by Sauer due to late war shortages.  It was only added in 1939 to satisfy the requirements OKH.  In my collection I have both model 38 and the model 38H guns mainly police issue and they over lap each other as to their production date.  Model 38 with the thumb safety, the 38H, are not that rare.

Ah, thanks for the correction.

I had made the assumption that the safety elimination was a shortcut.   Good info.
