Title: Russian 7.62x39 Identification
Post by: Phosphorus32 on August 25, 2016, 09:08:51 PM
Is this just run of the mill Russian steel case (гс)?  Wondering about the "8".  I don't have it so I can't open it and look at the boxes or cartridges.

The патрон охотничьи translates to "hunting ammunition"

Can't assume 100% that it's hollow point because it says hunting ammo (unless you know this particular can coding is actually hollow point). I have Russian ammo that's labeled "hunting ammunition" and it's FMJ.

Of course.....do not take this as gospel......but quoted from the AK forumn....
This is Russian commercial (not surplus) hollow point ammo, made by Ulyanovsk. It's not great ammo but it is not bad either. It is not sealed at the case mouth or the primer. The only, and I mean only, dud primers I have ever had in the 20+ years I've been buying and shooting this caliber has been with this same ammunition. Mine was lot "b-18-94". You got two cans of 660 rounds each for $175, so that is about $.13 per round. Not bad by today's standards...

I would not use this stuff as SHTF ammo.

The cyrillic writing roughly translates as "Cartridges Hunting"."

Thanks Pat. I'm going to pass on this stuff. I wanted to make sure it wasn't the special "hexagonal" hollow point.

It could be that the -8 stands for 8m3 which would make it Uly HP.

Of course it could be 8m1 or 8m2 as well.  Neat stuff regardless Jon. You're braver than I to think of opening it.

I didn't buy it. I was looking.  If it's just run of the mill $0.25 or less per round stuff then I'm not interested.  If the the "8m#" is cool stuff then I'd be interested. My knowledge of Russian 7.62x39 is near zippo  rofl

Yup, I hear ya Jon!  Same here.
The 94 on the tin fits right in with the 91-94 golden import window of Russian surplus armaments.  Too bad this stuff has a bad rep.
