Title: British Webley MkVI
Post by: Greasemonkey on August 04, 2016, 08:54:49 PM
Here is my last one...the one 'ol Phos32 has been patiently waiting on..marks and all. 1917 MkVI in .455, it never was converted for moon clip use, hopefully, maybe P32 will decipher all these stamps :)

For a revolver it is pretty healthy in size, and actually, I wanna try it. thumb1

I'm guessing this is maybe a real early import stamp.

To give some idea on the size here it is with the vz27. Well, either that or the vz just appears that small.

Some real old grungy Kynoch .455 ammo I got in a lot box of misc. ammo years ago, might be as old as the pistol for all I know, the head stamp is just Kynoch 455 ..I doubt it would even fire. :) I'm guessing it's fairly close to the original bullet weight, 265grains or so.

Nice man, You can pick that ammo up at any ole wally world right?  :)) You lucky dog. How much you think that beast weighs?

I was researching a Long Branch Lee Enfield I picked up and It has a similar stamping like in your 4th pic. IIRC Its an Export stamp done when it was earmarked for sale as surplus. I thought it was neat that a country went through the trouble to stamp caliber and Barrell proof? and other such info before it was sold as most of our beloved surplus did not receive such attention.

Geez, what a weird duck.   You have to light that thing with a fuse stick or what?   :))

JK man.   Looks pretty.... cool?

Well the Webley weighs in at 38 ounces, the vz 24 ounces according to what I found.

So the England stamp is an export, not a import stamp?

She might be old and and she might be slow...but I bet it puts a big hole in things :)

I know the tonage crud is from when it became a civilian firearm, but I dunno about the 'england' stamp.

Found where I knew those stamps in the 4th pic. Has a pic with it so info is different but the jist is there.

"Export Marks Now this may well be one of the more common set of stamps. A set of information marks, that were stamped onto the rifle when sold out of service. That the rifle fired a ,303 projectile, the case max overall length was 2.222 in inch’s and it was pressure tested to 18.5 to ton. The BNP stood for British Nitro Proof, it was tested and passed Nitro proofing."

Here's the site, it has helped alot. All kinds of British enfield stamps. You can even decipher all those damn crowns if ya want  :))

As for the England stamp...I've got 2 Enfields that were brought in before '68 and 1 was British made and has the same England stamp and I'll have to check on the Canadian made Long Branch. It definitely received plenty of the British stamps and crowns though.

Wow GM, that is great, congrats on another danged decent snag!

I think maybe those little arrow heads stamped everywhere might represent the Indians shot with that pistol...you know...like notches or sumpin!  ;) Danged if those rounds don't look like semi-wadcutters.

Very cool!   :o  8)

The GR over P is the original military proof. Georgius Rex, and since it's dated '17, that'd be King George V (reigned 1910-36). The "broad arrows" are military acceptance (post inspection) marks.

Yup, the BNP (British Nitro Proof) xx tons etc. is the commercial proof done upon release to the civilian market as required by law, as is the England export mark, as already described.

That 265gr FMJ Kynoch (Birmingham, England) ammo is military surplus. Cartridges of the world shows the 265gr .455 Revolver MkII ammo as lumbering along at 600 fps, just over Mach 0.5  rofl and generating ballistic energy of 220 ft-lb, so just 2/3 the ballistic energy of a 7.62x25 Tokarev round...but it makes a big adze hole  :o  chuckles1

Awesome score to find one that hasn't had the cylinder shaved to accept .45ACP  thumb1  :)
