Title: Rolled the dice with SOG
Post by: MEBears on October 01, 2015, 09:42:31 PM
I've been thinking about a Mak for a while and decided to pre order one from SOG a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure what to expect. Their first ad was a total fairy tale. It said they were Bulgarians made in the sixties ??? and in storage since the seventies "unfired" and "unissued". Turns out it looks like they came from Slovenia with the recent batch of rifles. They have a Slovenian log book with dates reported around 2002. The Maks seem to be late eighties production and my FFL said they look brand new. I wish he would have sent a better picture. I want to pick it up tomorrow but I also want to go to the Auction at Poulins. There are a few interesting lots tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get back before he closes.

One of them belongs to my FFL but he did pass on the savings so it ended up being $322. I may end up ordering another with a friend of mine though.

Surprising that the original description could be so far removed from reality.  They are certainly pristine looking!  Please let us know how she shoots when you get her!

I picked it up today and it is in excellent condition. The bluing is perfect except for a small scratch on the slide and the bore looks brand new. It has a Slovenian log book with a 2001 date. The preservative on it is quite sticky and smells awful, sort of a mix of mildew and kiwi spray. I really like the feel of it in my hand and am looking forward to trying it out.

(Not to be an enabler or anything Hippie, but I've hear that once you try a PM, you'll never quite look at a Tok the same again...)

You have to admit that sucker is beautiful!

(Just saying...)

I was a little curious about Slovenia using Makarovs when it seems like there would have been plenty of M57s around or other domestically produced pistols. I found this excerpt in a book about arms dealing that mentions 10,000 Makarovs being seized in Slovenia that were being smuggled to Croatia during the wars. Interesting.

I managed to get it cleaned up and ready to go. I didn't plan on a complete tear down but that sticky crap was everywhere. It was much easier to take apart than put back together. pullhair1 I hope I don't have to change the extractor for a while. I ordered some Pearce grips and one of the Russian owb holsters on ebay. I haven't decided what to get for a CC holster.

They are really nice pistols. I've had it out a couple times and it is a great shooter. I don't practice as much as I should but I got pretty good results on paper and no malfunctions with S&B or Wolf. The one drawback is the sights. I can see why people buy the Novak or other sights. If I came across one already upgraded for a decent price I'd grab it.

I can relate to the sight drawback. I used a dab of white auto touch-up on the front sight of my p-64'S and it really made a big difference for my sorry eyes..  :))  Id really like to get my hands on a nice one like yours pictured.  thumb1
