Title: First SKS
Post by: xbr10dr on September 12, 2015, 12:35:14 PM
Got my first SKS today (BM 767 backwards n) so i'm thinking its a 1957 letter gun. The bolt, receiver, magazine, and trigger group numbers all match, the stock is xxxx out and stamped 767. Are there any other parts that should be stamped? It's raining here today so no pictures yet, maybe later today or tomorrow.

Is it blued or bbq painted?  Laminated stock?

The backwards N is the Russian letter I and is 1957... Russian Letter Series in Russian SKS - Page 1 of 1 (http://sks-files.com/russian-sks/19/russian-letter-series/764/)

It's blued, and the stock is solid not laminated, with a red shellac looking finish. The receiver cover has a very faint refurb mark on the top, sort of like a diver flag, and matching number on the end. The import stamp is on the right side of the receiver, in front of the latch,  CDI Swan VT.

Paid $550 for it, probably not the best price but not the worst either.

Im sure its a nice carbine.

Its been reworked as the stock was replaced (original was laminated) and old number xxxed out, and it has the diver down rework stamp.  Since its a blued gun, I would call it  'medium' rework.

Back of the receiver cover, and bolt carrier, as well as the bolt. Other parts typically (but not always) electro-penciled: gas piston, gas tube, bottom of rear sight leaf.

Congrats!  thumb1 I love the looks of the Russians. Looking forward to pics.

Not all originals were laminated some were hardwood.
Can't wait to see it, Congrats!!

Wasn't this only on the 56?  This is a 57...

The 57 in the letter series sticky is a hardwood original.

Photos will tell the whole story, but judging from the most recent GB report, you probably got a good deal as long as there's not something massively wrong with it.  Light refurbs averaged $586 this month.

Your BM767_И was likely issued in a laminate stock like this one that came several thousand after yours:

I had a chance to buy this gun twice (once at auction and then once from a buddy of mine who put it up for auction a second time) but simply didn't pull the trigger.  Of all my firearms regrets, not buying Boomer's pristine letter И the first time it was offered for sale eats at me the most.  cry1

I can at least feel good that it now belongs to a *very* good home of a seasoned collector who I know will take very good care of it.  thumb1

Well I finally got some pictures, I've been sick or working all week. Upon further review it looks like it's a BBQ gun, and it has the CCCP import stamp which I read is not so desirable. The receiver cover is blued as well as the FCG, mag, and butt plate. the rest looks to be paint. But it's my first SKS and I love it, so thats all that counts!

Don't fret so much on the CDI CCCP stamp, I personally think knocking a gun based on an import stamp is ridiculous.  It's not like the collector has any control over what the importer did to it back in the 90's.

It's interesting to see the Г on the stock of your gun.  I've seen others with П in that exact same spot, it certainly means something.  In the '56 to '61 timeframe, we know the Russians switched to letter codes to indicate years.  There has been speculation that Г = 1955, but no proof to say that's indeed the case.  It'll be interesting to see the rest of your photos and see what the refurb stamps say.  Do you have a photo of the left side of the buttstock with the S/N and anything XX'd or sanded off?

There is a pic of the left side stock, very faint star with what looks to be 1955, 1956, or 1958 below, my eyes are getting bad and I can't find my magnifying glass. Getting old is not for sissy's.

I'm reading 1953 on that stock, though it could be '55.  '56 stamps are purported to have been seen in Canada, but I have my reservations. To my knowledge, a '58 has never been seen. Regardless of what it is, the stock is not original to the rifle.  Still, like PS say this is a light refurb. It's a very nice gun, you picked a good one for your first!  thumb1
