Title: So if you saw a beat up Sporter in the LGS...
Post by: Stoned_Oli on June 18, 2015, 10:00:43 AM
What would you offer?
I am stick at $400 myself... maybe to throw it into a poly stock...
The thumbhole stock doesn't have any serious cracks or chips, but is scratched up enough to require sanding and refinishing.
No pics, I have been scared to go in there since I got excited and paid off my car and MC insurance and some other bills early... damn OT checks get me every time...
Romanian mag, no sling, and a $550 price tag, IIRC.  fart1

What do you mean by 'sporter'?

A Sporter:

Not a Dee or an Emm or an NR/63/93 for that matter.  chuckles1

Prices on a bubba AK accepting SKSs seem to be hovering right around $500 on GB.  I don't think $400 is a bad deal at all especially if the stock is salvageable.

So how does it work to throw one of these into a replacement stock?  Do you have to transfer over the magwell liner and mag release from the old stock?

yeah 4-450 would be a good price I think, I would just refinish it, its not too hard even a caveman can do it. chuckles1

Ok, would I personally pay 4-450 for a "beat up" tainted sporter, then try to track down pieces and parts then throw 50-100 bucks in parts at it to un-taint it.

Nope, me, I'd sit around, wait, ever so patiently for a unmolested nice one for 500 or so.

There is always a better deal waiting to be found, it's just a matter of looking and waiting for it.

But, thats just me :)

Ah...  Well to me a sporter has always been a bubba k98 or similar, and were there not standard cinfig sks rifles with the bayo removed that were labeled 'sporter'?

Sporter....to me means. F***ed up in John Boys busted knuckle bubba garage or factory f***ed up to make a dollar off commercialism or modify it to milk a loophole and skirt around a law.

Marketing ploy.  Every std. type 56 B-West I've ever seen has been a "Sporter":

Anytime "Sporter" and "Thumbhole" are used in the same sentence, assume it's an exporter modified AK Mag accepting commercial gun!  thumb1

GM has a good point about waiting for a nice one and paying $100 more for it.  There is something to be said for going into a LGS and bringing one home today though.....

I must have missed the word 'thumbhole'.   Ill let it go this time,  but you better get your act together.    rofl

If it needs 50-100bucks to put back orginial, only thing one could say while grabbing their ankles is,  Thank you, may I have another, cause when one pops up in orginial unmolested form locally for 450, a week later, there is whining and crying to follow, 9 times outta 10, thats how it works. rofl.    It ain't like there were only 100 or so imported or it's uber rare.

Don't spend good money on a beat up sporter. They are everywhere. I paid 450 for my NICE sporter. They are also the same gun as an M, just with a different stock. And Ms are everywhere too. Both models use the short gas system from the SKSS.

Woah, I did not expect that reply from PS!  He & GM are right though, there are tens of thousands of these things floating around.

Am I the only one who thinks Oli should take a second hard look at it?!?  doh1

He didn't say it was all outright bubba'd, just said the stock was scratched and would need a refinish.  $20 in supplies and a few hours of time should get it back to tip top shape I'd think.  If it could indeed be had for $400, I'd be looking her over pretty closely before I decided I think....  clap1 (how the heck did I get to be the cheerleader telling someone to give it another chance?  I'm always the guy that's telling people to hold off or walk away!!!) doh1

Well the less guns other people buy, the more for me! Apparently I'm buying every sks there is lately, lol.

Actually, if it's JUST a stock condition issue, then 400 isn't bad. One nice thing about new production guns, is that very little is serialed. No serialed triggers, AK mags, or receiver covers. So if its had stuff changed, you're not losing much value.

One thing to check....the serial of the gun. If it's an 88 model year...that's rare and desireable. Hell I'd even have you buy it for me if it's an 88 and you don't want it. The 93 and 94 sporters are the really common ones.

I have to jump on the wait and see what else pops up band wagon. I've been looking around for a sporter/M/D for a while just to have one and see what all the craze is about. Had a sporter pop up on my local armslist, and he wasn't asking gunbroker prices for it. Contacted him, got more pictures, even meet him and looked at it. It was in a combat exchange folding stock, and he did not have the original (-$125-$150), the rest of the gun was in great condition, no wear, no rust, he said he shot 2 30 round mags through it cleaned it and it sat for 10-15 years. Safe was full and just wanted to get rid of guns he didn't shoot. He was asking $450, I told him if he had the original stock I would pay that for it, but $300 is where I was at. Couple days go by, and he calls me and says he will take $350. I about jumped on it, but said how about $325. He declined my offer. I just couldn't stand that nasty stock on there, and $300 is what I was going to spend if I would then have to turn around search for a sporter or M stock and pay $150 for one.

Here she is. I'm still flip flopping on my decision $350 for a sporter :-\

I have two B-West 'Sporters'...I dunno what that was supposed to mean to B-West, but it obviously isn't what everyone else meant.

They never come up around here at all, I did see one at a gun show NIB no less...and I wanna say it was $575ish. I would take a dive into the AK world I think first before dropping that kind of cash...as I bet you dollars to dognuts I would score one for $250 the following week...probably a platinum coated prototype for Security Services Elite Parade Squad.  chuckles1

I shouldn't overly count my chickens until the postman arrives....but I have an Aussie Thumbhole inbound...and it takes bayonets too.
I am gonna make my own. :)

bbush44....I would jump on that gun...it looks like it has the rare folder that Combat Exchange made for it. That is a pretty good price for even an average bubba around here.  The stock could bring as much as a replacement sporter stock would run you...just sayin' wink1

Probably why he sold it the next week for his asking price. O well.  cry1

I am not really in the market for a Sporter in good shape... my aims were to find a poly stock thick enough to not need the liner. There is a guy on that other board that has a green one in his sig line, looks like a plastic M, that I kind of like...
I've actually been walking away from this one for months, and have no trouble keeping that up! It struck me as almost futzed enough to Bubba, but still in apparently functional shape with decent metal.
I also have a Yugo stock laying around, which would make it more my desired length and potentially be thick enough to use without the liner. That thumbhole stock is looooooooonnnnnnnnggggggg.
I have owned an M before and kind of liked it.
I think I will let this one lie for now though...

A few hours,  naw man, time is money to me, a few hours to strip and then sit around buffing, stroking and polishing my wood............stock,  thats valuable time down the crapper I could be finding and unmolested example, putting that 20bucks of stripper and stock KY Jelly stain to use in ammo down range.  And for what, a one of 687,932 rifles imported, geez, thats like doing a frame up restore on a 97 Honda Civic.   Send me the 20bucks, give me a little time, and I'll just find ya one. thumb1 rofl2

I could go full Bubba and sell the stock...  fart1
