Title: made by Norinco?
Post by: chainsaw on May 25, 2015, 02:39:19 PM
My 11million /26\ says made by norinco on it and I was wondering how norinco made the thing before norinco was even norinco.

Loose_Cannon and Running-man I'm sure will chime in on this, but my understanding is this...  all SKS's imported say made by Norinco. Norinco as known by that name came about in 1980, however the state owned factories that turned into Norinco were still making the guns decades before that. So really, same factories, with just a name change in 1980.

Ok,so since it was made before norinco came to be,is it considered what everybody calls a norinco sks?and what exactly is a non-norinco?

Yeah, a lot of people call Chinese SKS's "norincos", pretty much because every imported one says made by Norinco. Norinco stands for China NORth INdustries COrp. Norinco is a group of state owned, and state approved companies brought together under the Chinese govt to produce many items, mostly defense/military based. These companies and factories were around before the merging under one name, so pre-1980 SKS's could be called Norincos, even though the name wasn't around then.

Again, other guys here know way more than me and will probably chime in. I THINK my explaination is pretty close to correct, lol.

And I would say a non-norinco would be any SKS not made in China :)

Pretty much PS, you're on the right track.  LC knows the timeline much better than I do, but the whole semantics about certain people on certain boards coming down like a hammer on you for even uttering the word Norinco is ridiculous and oozes ignorance.  Norinco makes many high end defense articles to this day, and they were absolutely cranking out SKSs since the early 80s.

Now whether it's technically correct to call a /26\ gun from the 60's a "Norinco", meh probably not, but the word has become synonymous for what it is just like Kleenex for tissue, Xerox for copy, or iPod for Mp3 player.  We don't rag on people for not being as technical as they should be here (well maybe for "dust cover" as poor Carl in CT might have an aneurysm).  We just try and teach what we know and learn what we don't. thumb1
