Title: My 1958 Chinese SKS
Post by: jda70 on May 20, 2015, 10:35:03 AM

Hi.

Here are a couple pictures of my SKS.
I'll get better pictures up as soon as I can
and talk a little more about what condition it was in
when I got it and what I did to bring her back into
decent safe condition.

Nice one Jda, did you put the finish on the stock yourself, or did the stock come that way?  Was this one a gunsmith special that needed some TLC?  Looks pretty nice to me!   thumb1

It was just a regular 300 dollar internet buy. The stock that came with it
was a Russian stock. Someone had messed up the front end of pretty bad
so the action kept moving around. It was a bummer but I had
to trash that stock and replace it with a Chinese stock. Got one off eBay that
someone had sanded down and stained a ugly color over the top of dirt and Cosmoline.
So the replacement stock was stripped and a coat of Shellac was applied.

That's top shelf jda!  thumb1  If that's a 3mil /26\ I have one also, that is a very nice looking carbine. Good job bringing it back to life.  clap1

Very nice indeed!  thumb1

Have you still got the Russian Stock?

We could certainly use it if you're willing to donate/let it go at a reasonable price for our laboratory wood analysis.  Let me know!

It's a 3mil /26\ . Not matching. At some point in time the Bolt and Bolt carrier were replaced.

No Sorry, I don't have the stock that came with it.

The magazine was rusted. One spot was pretty bad with major pitting.
So I disassemble the mag, stripped it down to bare metal and Rust Blued it using
Mark Lee's Express Blue #1.

The Gas tube is a replacement from a de-milled gun. I still have the gas tube that
came with it. It looks good but it's one of the 2 piece types. I wanted the early type
on mine and switch them out.
