Hi all. Just bought my first SKS last week and have a question about the bolt carrier and stripper clips. The bolt carrier does not have the notches for the clip. Is this common? Can I still use stripper clips to load it? I don't have any to try, and didn't want to order any without knowing if they would work.

You cannot use striopers with that carrier.. you can however get a standard carrier of any country and utilize it with the rifle. Just be sure to keep the original!
The barrel says Cugir Romania, and the s/n on receiver is RAnn -1960. Other s/n's are non-matching.
I have no trouble hand feeding the cartridges. Is it really worth getting a carrier that can use stripper clips? I'm not the type to go out and shoot a couple hundred rounds or more in one session.
Sounds like you have a gun someone made up from parts.... can you post pics of all the serials on all the parts?
Sometimes you can stumble upon a carrier on eBay for under $20. You definitely have a mixmaster there with the Chinese carrier and Romanian receiver.
If you decide to stick with the non slotted carrier, you might try loading shells into the open magazine a la Jerry Miculek:

Does a 3 number stamp on the carrier seem odd? I checked the commercial site and it seems like a 5 digit number is more common. There is even a 00001 listed.
I am interested to seeore pics!

If its a franken gun... its pointless as only the carrier has that number. Guessing is off a low serial M or D?

Kind of an odd mismatched piece to have.

Wait till you see the number on the stock. I can't really tell what it is, so will post a pic. It looks like it has a larger number embossed over a smaller number!

Mix-master. Someone has taken a Romanian barrelled receiver, and then put it together with whatever SKS parts they had.
That's a really interesting one Indy. Romy gun, refurbished romy stock that's probably been refinished with poly stateside. A very late Chinese mag, that really odd low numbered SKS D or M bolt carrier...
The most interesting thing for me is the import stamp. They stamped the FSB with the importer information and the model, country of origin, and caliber on the barrel Igbo in fro t of the gas block. I've never seen that before! thumb1
My Romanian was imported in the 80's, as was this Romanian barreled receiver. My import mark looks similar, with CAI separate, but just more forward on the barrel, not on the FSB. Odd indeed
