SKS-Sporter
« on: May 25, 2015, 02:22:13 PM »
Picked up a nice 1993 Sporter today. I wish it was one of the more rare 88 models, but this one is still really nice :)

After getting an M and now a Sporter, and reading up on the history of the two, it's pretty apparent that they are the same gun, just with a different stock (same year, AK mags, short gas system taken from the SKSS, all new parts, etc).

Along with the gun, came six 30 round AK mags, and about 300 rounds of ammo.  thumb1

Hope you like her!

That's a beaut PS!  How uncomfortable is the thumbhole to deal with?  I never was a huge fan of the solid block up front.

Thanks! The thumbhole is kinda weird (never gripped one before), but the hand positioning actually feels pretty natural. The flat front end of the stock (also on the 63 as you know), I am pretty sure was to imitate a benchrest type stock, as hardcore benchrest guns have flat bottom fronts. That's fine with me, because I bench shoot all mine anyway. You can definitely feel the weight difference in the nose vs the M. I wouldn't want to be off handing the Sporter for any length of time.

Check out my new M and 10 mil /26\ too :)

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

Y'know...a couple weeks ago I was happy for you, a week later I kind of was again....now you are starting to make me jealous.  bat1

Another chance to live vicariously through others purchases though.

WHY can't any of these show up in my neck of the woods?!

Nice rifle. I have its twin which is also a '93. The only issue I've had is that it sometimes doesn't want to seat a full magazine. Downloading by one or two rounds solves the problem.

Good luck with yours.

I haven't shot it yet, but I'll let you know how it goes. My SKS-M seems to work fine, and it's the same gun with a different stock. Are you using the 10 round AK mags, or higher capacity?

I use both 20s and 30s.

I've got 30s, but haven't tried them. When you say "seat" the mag, do you mean actually snapping it into the gun?

One thing I've noticed with this M, is that if my magazine has the top round on the left, it won't feed it. But if the top round is on the right, it feeds fine.

Yes. Snapping the mag into the rifle is the problem. The way to seat a full mag is to hold the bolt open while inserting the mag. This almost requires three hands as the Sporter lacks a BHO. I haven't noticed any difference as to what side the first cartridge resides as regards feeding. I'll have to check when I can get out to the range. I've had some issues interfering with my range time.
