Russian SKS crate
« on: December 29, 2023, 02:20:59 AM »
I was hoping you guys could help me figure out what this crate’s markings mean. My best guess is the top left 56 is meaning 1956 but I have no idea. Also a picture of my collection inside is included for your viewing pleasure.

Looks like Cyrillic markings due to the "15 ШТ." which is commonly used in military markings and stands for "15 units" or "15 ea."  If so then Russian, Yugo, or other eastern block origin.

Hard to read some of the letters due to the particular stencil style and my seriously lacking Cyrillic reading skills, but I see:

First Photo: 56-А-231    15 ШТ.
                         2821/923

Second Photo:  УНИ?-2
            <>     N?(Shouldn't be an N if Cyrillic but clearly different than the И above, may be an M?)1363

Quite possibly a Mosin M44 crate, many carbines were imported in these 15 rifle crates, either way, it's cool  thumb1

Great link  thumb1 The guy chiming in with all of the info is Ratnik or R_L, aka Alex, who owns/operates the https://www.m9130.info/ site, so good info based on primary sources.

The following site has GRAU numbers showing that the OP’s crate is for the SKS

56-A-231 is the GRAU code for the SKS, so you’ve got the right rifles in yours  thumb1

So in layman's terms
56-А-231 = this is an sks crate
15ШТ = quantity
УНИ-2 = protective coating (cosmoline?)
N1363 = crate number

So what do these markings mean?

<> = ?
2821/923 = ?

Yes. According to Ratnik УНИ-2 is a hexamine nitrite corrosion inhibitor. It’s a surface treatment applied to the metal, not an ersatz Cosmoline. He retrieved original documents from Russian archives for his research, so I’m confident that his details are accurate.

The <> marking is probably the diamond refurbishment arsenal marking.

2821/923 ? I don’t know.

M44 BARELY fits (probably wouldn’t be able to store more than one row before the forward support won’t fit anymore)
