I just dumped some superfluous, overrated and overvalued guns. So let's go shopping.
Which would you rather have and why?
Mauser Luger
WW1 original Colt 1911
-
How many of each do you currently have?
-
I'm not sure :-\
Let's say none of each. I'm a blank slate. Tabula rasa. John Locke. Francis Bacon. Startin' from scratch.
-
To be clearer...I definitely don't have any WW1 colts. Don't have a '39,'37,or '36 Luger either.
-
I reject the submitting of an entry
-
I reject your suggestion!
-
WWI M1911. Because I don't have either pistol and I'd rather have an American 1911 than a German Luger if I had to pick just one (not that I wouldn't want to have both). I'm on a bit of a WWI kick (if you can call a 4 year 100 year anniversary window a kick) so I'd love to have an early 1911. Speaking of kicks, .45 ACP vs. 9x19mm, do I need to say more?
-
History on both is plentiful and robust. However, both are fantastic firearms and worth owning both. I would opt for the Luger over the Colt. Not down playing the .45ACP, but the Luger has more 'sex appeal", to me anyway. Plus more rounds down range, easier to handle, conceal, cock, etc.

I'll do what the gov does, and I'll do it for free just for you.
Send me all the money you want to send, then in 10 years I'll let ya know what you bought.
Always wanted a dirty bird Luger in great shape.
-
I am a big and long time admirer of the Luger but I have to stand with Phosphorus on this one...WWI .45 ACP hands down!
-
Would I be outa line if I muddy the water a bit, and suggest that you also consider a nice US 1917 45 ACP Smith and Wesson Revolver??
I think it might give ya more bang for your buck, and you simply can't get cooler than those. jd
-
Jd my cousin had one of those, made my heart race to heft and fire it. They are way too cool!
-
I saw Danny chipping in here & I knew he'd be on the 1911 side. That's a man who appreciates masterful American sturdiness & functionality...not that esoteric underpowered dysfunctional Notzee junk.
Would I be outa line if
Totally out of line...
BANNED.
I've spent some time with a 1917. Eh... I don't appreciate revolvers. I've never held or shot one and said "this just feels right."
-
Since you are definitely into Rugers and if this fills a hole I would stick with the luger.
-
Neither :o got a few Lugers and a 1911...yawn, zzzzz
I vote exotic, not same 'ol bla bla, something saucy like a Vz61, nasty like a Thompson, funky like an Suomi, how about a M1941 Johnson, or M3 subgun or a Sten. A PPSH would make my Cintas pants move. Damn, even an MP40, make me raise an eyebrow, come on, I dare ya, get the Sasquatch excited...
Your one.of those people who eat chicken salad samitchs all their life, never daring to try peanut butter and jelly.. Mix it up, try a tuna samitch. rofl
But its your.dough, blow it on what ever...
Dont get all pissy, you asked for opinions, like bungholes, everyone has one, and some stink!!!
-
Vishnu...I suppose I should have known better. I ask a simple A or B, either or question. I guess it's not as simple as I'd anticipated.
If I could get a Johnson or Mp40 for the same money as a Luger, I assure you my avatar would look much different than it does now. Unless you'd like to loan me a couple grand, those are not viable options.
PPSH...Russian trash. Pass.
Suomi...Finnish trash. Pass.
I've eaten Chinese, Scottish, American, Swedish, German and English gourmet. I know what I like.
Now, if you want to contribute something pertinent to my question at hand, I'm all ears.
Dont get all pissy
Too late for that.
some stink!!!
No argument there.
-
Oh, he getting pissy rofl2, hes so.cute when pissy. Come at me bro bat1
Man up, buy a Swiss made Luger, I might just breath heavy for a second. chuckles1
Junk, dude, they all are junk, thats why they are called "military surplus", surplus equals junk. If it wern't surplus it would still be in use buy the respective country.

Connon likes the Swiss Luger idea. :)
-
I vote Luger, just because they simply have a cool factor. Always enjoy looking at one.
My Great Uncle has a WWII 1911, cool, but not as.
-
The Luger does have that sex appeal...damn they're beautiful.
1911s are natural shooters. Powerful. 'Murican.
I'm lost. I'll just give Bernie the money and let him decide. I'd hopefully not have to wait 10 years tho.
-

YEAH! Arguably the longest serving military issued handgun in the world, and still serving among some U.S. units. It's making a comeback. There's a good reason for that!

But.... its not nazi :-\
-
Absolutely right L}{C...but the 1911 was the "victor", twice!
-
Actually Dannyboy, if you want to get technical, the 1911 is not making a comeback. It is the 1991 that is rising up in prominence. It is the 45ACP that is making a comeback.
Am I splitting hairs here or what :o :o :P :P rofl rofl

Actually.. 9mm is the one making a comeback. With the hot loads & mag capacity, all police departments at least in my area are switching back from .40'a & .45's, and so are the FBI
-
Greatguns, you hair-splitter! ;) You're right however, but for all practical intents and purposes it's still the same design.
Worm there was a time when I had very little confidence in the 9mm round as a police or self defense cartridge because of what I had witnessed when I was a cop. I always carried a .357 magnum for that reason, the magnum round can hardly be cast in a marginal category.
But I have also seen a busload of improvements in 9mm ballistics for at least the past decade. There are still some that berate this old cartridge and I now believe that is a big mistake these days! The 9mm is a much more serious contender than it was back in the day.
-
I've had some folks jump on my back for trusting a Glock 19 in 9mm. They end up spouting the merits of 357 sig, the power of 40s&w, etc. It always ends the topic quickly when I offer to let me shoot them with the 9, to see if it ruins their day.
For as much as I fellate the 1911, I can see where contemporary forces might consider it obsolete. Doesn't the modern mantra within military/police/security units laud capacity over projectile size?
-
I know when i was in the Marines, the officers etc had some Barreta 9mm and they freaking hated it with a passion.

LOL...there are some 9mm rounds on the shelves today that are bad to the bone, I would not have accepted that offer either Blicero!
-
Well, the question is settled. I won a Luger last night...early this morning actually. Big mistake on the seller's part letting an auction end first thing Sunday morning. That cost him money.
-
Congratulations sir! clap1
-
I knew you wouldn't be able to hold out for the right ww1 1911. rofl
-
I'm sure everyone who knows me who read this thought the same thing. Yeah right that Nazi scumbag would never turn down a Luger why is he even asking???
I already have a Colt waiting in the wings for me though. :)
-
Luger....just because it is naughty to be American and lust for them.
-
I couldn't vote for either. But then I like the P.38 pistols.
-
Yea, I couldn't either, a P38 would have been different, heck even a Broomhandle. Or a Mannlicker chuckles1 M1903 Pistol
Even, a Femaru :o would have been a super cool purchase. thumb1
But the wallet that be, spoke, well actually thru a pissy fit, and alas, it's another, Luger, it is, what it is.
I'm still trying to locate and get him a Hitler "FatHead" to mount over his bed. thumb1
-
I'm trying to find the part in the thread where I asked if I should be looking for a p38 Femaru or broomhandle.
I'm so sorry to have bored you with my options.
I reckon moving on to another thread if you don't find 1911s & Lugers a compelling enough choice would've been too much to ask.
-
rofl
It sounds like you picked c) both
-
Hands off me Femaru! bat1 bat1

Oh, well excuse me, wait, what about?
respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble,
Oh, ok, opinions are not welcome, yet, you ask for an opinion. I'm trying to find the part where I have no Constitutional right to speak, I can smell what your shovelling Heir Hitler!!. clap1
I apologize oh great exalted one thumb1 rofl rofl rofl chuckles1 chuckles1 rofl2 fart1

Constitutional rights have no bearing on a privately owned forum. We have forum rules, which you yourself penned, which effectively prohibit and censor the types of speech we have here. You may love to pound keys for the sake of hearing yourself talk, which is fine & dandy, but be under no illusion of having any sort of Constitutionally protected speech.
Before this thread spirals into oblivion, I will gracefully move on to more fruitful & productive endeavors, because I know you never would unless I did first. So please carry on and argue with a wall if your heart desires. I thank you for the memories and for the likening to "Heir" Hitler, whatever that is. Thanks to everyone who chipped in with answers pertinent to my original question.
