I talked to the guy who is selling the rifle....he says he turned off the gas system because he was shooting brass case ammo and wanted to collect the empties.  I will turn it to 1.2 and give it a try!

It is a standard issue Mosin sling, but not Russian Navy.  The collector accepted Navy Mosin slings typically will have black dog collars and the fabric is a very dark blue to black color.

The SVT kind of shared a sling with the PPSH..  Looks like this  SVT-40 Sling

I just looked at the gas system adjustment control and it was, indeed, turned off (between settings).  I turned it to 1.2 and it fired perfectly.  Bore looks great, no cracks in the wood that I can find, and I want it :o

I will keep you posted....

Got the rifle today!  It does have the scope mount grooves on the receiver...The guy says he is bringing the scope and mount for me to look at tomorrow...I will take some pics and post....He says it isn't a finn bear (what ever that means)

Congrats buddy! I would be flabbergasted if it were Finn. With all of that postwar Russian refurb stuff going on, if it had Finn marks it would either be fake or a capture-recaptured Tok. I've never heard of the latter.

If you plan on shooting it regularly, please let me recommend buying a 50$ handguard on gunbroker. Or just remove yours when shooting. Don't crack that original one.

The Svt40 is dear to me, I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Blicero, I was only going to bring it to the range once..but it is so fun to shoot that I may have to get the "shooter' hand guard.
The guy says that his scope mount is steel and the real deal, not cast iron.  I will post pics if he brings it is.

This rifle is quickly becoming a favorite...

Thanks for the help guys!

I hate to keep tacking onto your tab here but, if you're shooting surplus ammo, you'll likely need a broken shell extractor. Trust me. The lacquer coated cases love to rip in half in a SVT. It's pretty disconcerting the first couple times when you rip a case head and get a failure to feed. Just ram that shell extractor into the chamber and it will come out. The tok is just a high maintenance fickle beast in some respects.

Here are the pics of the scope and mount.  I don't have any idea what to look for to determine if it is a pass or purchase...

Looks real to me...  Blicero will likely give you his left nut or first born for it.

L-C...
I have been looking at the available scope mounts around the inter-web...$400 for reproduction mounts???
Makes me afraid to ask what this is worth if it is real....

He also gave me a 1938 91/30 hex, laminate to take home and love...I guess he needs some $$ or something.

My gun fund is drying up fast ???

Wow!  thumb1 That is very cool. I've never even held an SVT-40, let alone a sniper, so take my comments with a grain of salt, but that looks as real as it gets. The patina on the scope with the wear marks from the lens caps, the round headed screws on the elevation and windage knobs, and the makers markings speak to a legitimate PU scope. Similarly for the scope mount. Does the ground and restamped serial number on the scope mount match any other number on the rifle? I don't know who put it together but it looks like all real parts. If the real experts agree that this is all authentic parts then, even as a complete mismatch, that has to be worth $2500+, right?

Oh, and that 1938 91/30 on a hex receiver...have you looked at the tang date? Laminate means post war refurb on such an old 91/30, but the hex with a 1930's barrel date is very nice/unusual.

You sir, have had a very, very good week  thumb1  :)

Thanks Phos!

I have not done a thing with the Mosin and I agree with your assessment on the scope and mount.  The scope and the svt40 are both 1941 but the guy did not get them as a set.  He told me that his buddy's uncles dad brought the scope and mount back when he returned home from the war.  His buddy got it after his uncle's death and had no idea what it was and sold/gave/traded it to the guy that i got it from.  Before I saw the mount, I figured it was the usual bring back story....

My fat fingers failed me...the laminate Mosin is barrel dated 1932 and the tang date is 1931.  It is bbq painted, trigger is not sloppy at all without the bolt in the action.  Magazine is forced as is the bolt.

I didn't know I needed another moist!

A '31 is getting down to the final 5 years of production.  Even a refurb hex is a nice pick up.  With prices for MNs still climbing, it's a really nice pick up now.
