Bayonet staked
« on: December 13, 2020, 07:39:10 PM »
I bought a bayonet and a rifle was attached.  wink1

What's the thoughts on this bayonet stake mark original issued or removed/replaced?

Hmm, looks removed/replaced in that picture since the stake tool would have had to be oval with a different radius on the bolt end than the bayonet lug end.

Almost looks like the peens on the screw are on opposite sides they should be.

Definitely been removed...  Screw it in or out another 180° and the staking will look much better.

I was thinking it was removed for refurbishment then re-staked, thus the appearance. Having said that, it could also be 180 off

I put no stock in *any* peened bayo mark meaning anything other than the original mfgr peened the bayonet.  They are too easy to remove and replace during cleaning, refurb, or bubba-fying and if the exact same bayo screw is replaced to the same clocking they can absolutely look 'original' or can be repeened.  Way too many unknowns in the life of a military carbine imported for civilian use in the 80's and 90's for me to be able to come close to making that kind of a call (or the whole 'non-refurb/unrefurbished' moniker but don't even get me started on that one! chuckles1)

Yeah, I agree RM. I thought I actually had one that may not have been tinkered with when I took photo. When I posted I thought definitely has been off but wanted opinions.

I'm in the "180 degree" camp.
Apply a little pressure an see if it turns relatively easily.

chuckles1 rofl2  Wow... I'm of the camp of load that sucker, shoot it, repeat and clean it. I can not see those peen marks looking through the sights.

shoot it before.. then make them peen marks match up, see if accuracy gets better or worse and report back  rofl2 chuckles1 You bought a bayonet... see how that free rifle does. thumb1
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Laff, would not be much there for popcorn enjoyment I'm afraid, just a guy on the internet yelling his opinion out to the kids trampling on the front lawn!  dance2
