Title: GB listings for October, 2017 - Chinese Military
Post by: running-man on November 30, 2017, 01:45:40 PM
Here's the Military Chinese for the month:
Please let me know any feedback (good or bad) to these.

If you have an objection or observation to add to anything I've listed, by all means call it out.  Let's look at it long and hard (I only look at each listing for a minute or two at most) and maybe everyone can learn a thing or two!  thumb1

704053193 | SKS Jianshe Arsenal Chinese Rifle PARTS GUN No Reserve - Penny Start - 32 Auto / 7.65 | 15 | $245.00  | /triangle\ | Uncertain | Poor | Squib load still stuck in the barrel eh?  I'm shocked they would even list it in this condition.

I'm just trying to figure out......how, mixed in with a little why, with a touch of, was it imported in this condition.

I have seen and even piddled with a caliber conversion sleeve or two, but, I did not think they would have handed these out to soldiers. It's a fun little novelty, but I wouldn't want one when it's life or death.

709593401 | 1st Yr Production JIANSHE Arsenal SKS 7.62 x 39 NO RESERVE - PENNY START - BID NOW! | 20 | $300.00  | Ghost | Refurbished | Fair | Quite the low numbered ghost there.  Kind of a scummy looking gun though, Foxtrot Lima certainly didn't have the quality guns that IO, CAI, or TGI brought in.

Scummy... oh  nea1 that ugly makes it about the sexiest one out of the dozen I looked at.. it's honest ugly.  chuckles1

So many bubbas.. :-\

Thanks, RM.

No objections.  I'm just wondering how one could ever get a "Very Good" rating on your grading scale!

Hey Martin, good observation!

I'm a bit stingy with my grading scale, I agree.  VG are few and far between.  Those guns don't sell on gunbroker, they are kept close to the vest in people's collections and when they do change hands, typically go to a real auction, go on consignment in a reputable gun store, or go in a face to face deal.

It was far worse last year as I had these based on NRA grading (which as I quickly found out doesn't really apply to milsurp SKS sales on gunbroker) chuckles1:

Current Condition:
Perfect: In New condition in every aspect.  (Many collectors & dealers use "As New" to describe this condition).  Unfired since import.  Something in this category likely has the box, manual, all accessories, and maybe even the original receipt with it.
Excellent: New condition, used but little, no noticeable marring of wood or metal, bluing perfect, (except at muzzle or sharp edges).  Fired very little if at all.  Again, these guns typically have the original packaging and all accessories.
Very Good: In perfect working condition, no appreciable wear on working surfaces, no corrosion or pitting, only minor surface dents or scratches even though the gun has certainly been fired.  May or may not have the box and all accessories.
Good: In safe working condition, minor wear on working surfaces, no broken parts, no corrosion or pitting that will interfere with proper functioning.  Fired often, likely doesn't have the box, manual or any accessories.

Well I've only ever seen maybe one or two SKSs that could even come close to "Excellent" so I dropped both that and "Perfect" like a bad habit.  I kept the VG as the upper level and went from there (Commercial Chinese actually have an "Excellent" category, but they are typically 30 years younger than the typical military Chinese import and all started out Excellent before they shipped to the states).  The condition rankings changed a bit as well with the boxes and accessories needed to be VG on my list.  A good portion of the guns in many of our members' collections would rate VG or at the very least squarely between Good and VG.

Have to agree, any milsurp grading scale leaves a lot to be desired.

But dang, you're tough!   :o

709613656 | Norinco SKS Type 56, 7.62x39mm, Excellent | 1 | $400.00  | /triangle\ | As-Issued | Good | WOW.  What a nice 10 mil /26\!!!

My 10m came to me NIB....and I have always been curious, because mine is oiled wood...and totally original...about when did the furniture get different treatment?  This one is as orange and shellacky as a Chinese can get. (screw you spell nazi browser, I created yet another word...deal with it.)

Mine is totally different...more akin to earlier Chinese...but not beat to hell.  The only thing that happened to mine was me reinstalling the bayonet that was in the box. She was my second SKS, and the first that wasn't messed with...somehow, I have left it alone through all my silly tampering over all these years.

The NRA scales are basically worthlesss for the milsurp collector. Their modern scale seems to be targeted to newer higher priced commercial grade finish rifles and would place most 20th Century milsurps at the bottom of their scale. Their antique scale would place most 20th Century milsurps at the top of the scale.  chuckles1

+1 Jon, I agree completely.

So it being December, now is the time to start thinking if it makes sense to change the scale for 2018.  Martin's gun could easily be a VG, maybe an Ex, but with only a single photo (which is actually quite a bit better than I typically get from GB) I can't really say.

Maybe we go super simple and have a Good / Fair / Poor rating since it's such a subjective thing? chuckles1

I believe that 2018 will bring changes to the Chinese and Chinese Commercial listings.  Unless someone else wants to take them over, they may go the way of the Yugo lists as I simply don't have to time to dissect, categorize, & comment 85 bubba Chinese and 15 decent ones.  Unfortunately, w/o sorting the Chinese, the Chinese Commercial are impossible to segregate.
