Title: The end of the line: Mauser g33/40
Post by: Blicero on December 17, 2014, 04:47:20 PM
I was able to snag this g33/40 Gebirgsjaeger carbine recently. I was interested to find it because it's one of the last of the 33/40s ever made. It's accepted that the Czechs nixed production in the d-block, and I can find evidence of only one gun with a higher serial number (about 2000 units). With my '40 no letter block, it's neat have both one of the first and the last carbines produced.

One of the interesting things about the end-of-production guns was they aborted proofing the stocks.  Aside from the serial in the barrel channel, there's not a mark on the wood. Compare that to the heel serial and acceptance proofs on the '40 gun. I suppose the Brno factory was under some pressure to start making the more useful k98k, so they just abandoned some proofing practices in order to save time.

Holy Gebirgstruppen! und Auch du Mauserlieber!  It looks like that '42 has a beautiful laminate stock and nice bluing.  Cool history and observations.
