Do any duck bill mags have hold open function?
« on: June 27, 2017, 02:36:24 PM »
Thread title pretty much says it all.

But to expound: I'm looking for capacity upgrade options. I'm am 100% not familiar with any aftermarket magazines-- i.e. how they hold up? are they dependable? Which brands are best? And...of course the last round bolt hold-open option.

I had considered the 20 round Chinese internal mags-- but have heard mostly horrible things about them. Not to mention I think they're ugly.

Ideally what i'd like is a 20 round magazine with a last round bolt hold open feature.

Am I looking for a unicorn?

I'd get an sks-30 to a commercial model 63 but there's a good chance we'll be back in california by next summer.

From what I have experienced in the past, the Chinese 20rd mags are sometimes hard to find and expensive.  I sold 2 in the last year for $100 each.  I have been using a "no-name" 30 rd duckbill mag on my regular SKS shooter lately and have no issues with it since I have had it.  Only thing is it does not have the bolt hold open feature on it but is really no issue for me.  If I remember correctly, it only set me back around $20 total shipped.  I have a few others also but have not gotten the chance to try them for reliability yet.  It seems that they are all a trial and error adventure from what I have heard.

Crapco are likely the best, and I'm fairly certain they have a BHO.   Dry graphite lube does wonders to help the follower slide nicely.... Kinda how it makes pinebox derby cars go amazeballs faster down the slope.

Crapco, are you serious?  Never heard of them.  Are you pulling legs or squeezing "sponges"?  If not, let us all know where to find and get them please!

Crapco?  Obviously this can't be an English speaking company?

Or are you referring to Tapco derogatorily?

Or...typo?

Either way, thanks. I'll check it out.

Dont need no adapters to make my duckbills work!  Besides, his adapters are more than I would be willing to pay if I was interested in converting over to another style of mags!   >:(  Just not worth it to me!

I've got a 10rnd Promag ploy mag, with hold open. They make larger sizes. It's been flawless so far. Durable. Strong springs, great follower never had a single problem with any ammo. And a little filing on the rear corner of the feed lips let's me load with strippers too, but it's still not easy with the stiff springs. The duckbill has a great solid lockup with no wiggle. Imho it's a great mag for someone wanting to switch to detachable.

Thanks for the replies.

Ideally I'd like a 20 round fixed magazine that can be fed with stripper clips.

In lieu of a fixed magazine option a removeable magazine that can fill the same  function with the option of feeding via stripper clips is my second option.

I'll be picking up one or two magazines at the large Philly show in August.

The only 20 round fixed, is the Chinese aftermarket version. But they are hit or miss on function.

Is there a reason you want a fixed mag? Why not just put in a 20 round duckbill and leave it there. You can load any duckbill with strippers just like a fixed mag.
