Romanian M44
« on: February 24, 2015, 03:35:56 PM »
I have a thing for Romanian's and Mosins, I admit it. :)  Well here is the best of both worlds, a Romanian built M44 made in 1955. I got this with the 1971 Albanian. Total mismatch, and in a Hungarian (B) 02 stamped stock. It has a wonderful bore and a very smooth action. If you notice the barrel shank markings, they are very close to the Russian Izhevsk marks. The wreath, instead of the normal hammer and sickle, has RPR, Romanian People's Republic or Republica Populară Romînă, this name was used till around 1965. These were made for only 3 years, '53-'55, with a total production of around 70,000, making them a fairly uncommon variant in the Mosin realm. They even reused the serial method that carried over to the SKS, the typical two letter suffix followed by digits. And it even has what I'm guessing is a name, possibly the solder who carried it, carved into the finger grip.

Nice looking M44 Greasemonkey!

I have a Romanian M44 as well.  I got it in a trade deal.  It has really nice blueing, with the only defect I can see being the rear sling escutcheon is missing.  (I most likely don't know what else to look for!)  I look on gb for examples and value ideas but rarely see many.

I will post pics if you like!  Just let me know what areas you would like to see.

post it thumb1

And I found what I think is a poorly struck Bosnian Shield stamp. Guess with the borders like they were years ago in that region, anything is possible.

I posted the pics in a new thread.  I didn't want to hijack this thread.

A Bosnian Shield stamp?! That's freakin awesome! Love Romanian guns as well GM, Nice one. If I wanted one short Mosin it would have to be either a Romy or a Polock. Cool to hear it has a great bore too  thumb1

Good looking Romy GM! How tough would it be to find a numbers matching Romy?

In my opinion, it's usually a little easier to find a matching Romanian M44, than an all matching Romanian SKS.

The Polish variant, one of those along with a Hungarian M44 are on my eventual hit list as well.

I don't have any of the Eastern European Mosin carbines.  I have Russian M44's, an M38, and a Chinese T53.  Hmm, so I need a Polish, Hungarian and Romanian M44, a Czech M91/38, a Russian M91/59 and if I win the state (or pawn shop) lottery, an M1907.

If the M1907 :o is a little difficult to find, a Finnish [SA] marked M44 is pretty impressive piece to stumble on or find.

I still need to find an all matching Romanian and Albanian SKS. I do enjoy shooting my Romanian m44 though.  My wife gets a huge thrill out of shooting 200 grain down range with it. Now I'm gonna have to keep an eye out for a Finn....
