Hello new person here. I joined to learn more about my 2 SKS. First one is a SKS M type I got for $90 in 1993 or so. 2nd is boxed as unfired SKS surplus serial 18634XXj. What's up with these? Have not been able to upload pics yet says out of date browser on my up to date linux installation.
It is marked made in China by Norinco Poly Atl Ga USA.

Welcome from N.H. The SKS M is an acronym for monte carlo stock. These were new production Chinese commercial models for export to the U.S. and had 16.5" barrel and accept AK-47 magazines.
When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.

Thanks for the welcome! My M type is as stated a "Monte Carlo stock-not to be confused with my high school buddies 1970 Monte Carlo", it has some dings on the stock as it got thrown around  a bit way back but only 60 rounds through it with some made in china label mags. Picked it up new for $90 and a MAK for $110 back in the way back machine. Unfortunately I sold the MAK in 96 or so. The Poly is an unfired specimen looks pretty nice I am 3rd owner but still has some cosmo on it. /316\ mark 186xxx j serial . Again thanks.

Welcome from Kentucky, 3a.  There is a lot of factual knowledge here.  Just reading the sticky sections above each major section is a great way to gain further insight.  When you're able, post pix of your weapons.  We all enjoy them.

Welcome to the Files!  thumb1

Your rifle with the leading digits of 18, signifying 18th year of production of the Type 56, mean that it was made in 1973.

I don't run a Linux OS so I can't help you there (okay, I'm basically worthless at troubleshooting computer problems, regardless). On my Microsoft OS computers the "Upload image to post" feature below the enter text box works great. I usually use my own imgbb account and paste in the "BBCode medium linked" links when I'm uploading a series of pics of my firearms, for ease of organization.

Welcome to the party 3a. Curious is 3a26 your military MOS by chance or is there another meaning for it?

As to Linux, what flavor are you running? Are you using Firefox or Chromium? Also, as Pho32 mentioned the website ImgBB.com is a good site to up load from. I have been using it without even creating an account.
My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

Both look to be in great shape!

The /316\ is a year 18 (1973) gun, imported by Poly Tech USA out of Atlanta, GA (see #102 to #105 in the importers list

The SKS M I can't read the S/N.  It should begin with a number either 93 to 94 which is the year it was stamped for importation.  Likely the year built too, though it could have been built earlier.  Looks like a C&A import from Virginia Beach, VA.    Very nice, thanks for sharing!  thumb1

Serial is 93 (space) 709XX. Don't have a picture of it but will take one if you like.  It has a shorter barrel than the Poly like 16 inches. it is in the same condition as when I bought it in 1993 but unfortunately tossed the box. I think I got the cleaning rod and kit in the basement. You are correct stamps read VA BH VA. CBA import  best I  can tell.

Thanks again everyone for the input. The M is back to wearing the original wood hand guard, I had a (cough) Tapco on it for a bit as seen in the picture. My initial problem with posting photos was a browser setting with fire fox browser, on Debian Buster 10.3 operating system. Minor tweak to get it to post pictures.
Edit: New picture. Comparing the M to the Poly easy to see major differences. Found a cleaning rod Its shadow makes it appear as 2.
