Fixing an arsenal stock fix.
« on: July 19, 2020, 08:14:09 PM »
New to the Forum,  Thought i would jump head first into this.   I didnt like the way the stock was fixed  original or not  i bought some catalpa wood blanks that fit perfectly so here we go.

I paid Classic Firearms 350 + 25 for hand select and they sent me this.

Nice!  looks like you are well on the way to fixing what was already 'fixed'.

I agree with Justin.
And it appears you have the skill set to pull it off.

Looking forward to seeing the end result.

Had some pictures from before i tried to stain match the stock but my phone glitched and i lost those.
I dont think ill get rid of the joint line no matter how much sanding i do  so ill have to chalk this up to Good from a far but far from good attempt.     Atleast the stock lines are correct and its an improvement even if a marginal one at best.

Im also color blind so my ability to stain and blend the stock is hindered   Ill knock the sheen off steel wool and pick up that one edge that i missed next to the sling attachment but i think thats as far as im wanting to go for an old shooter.

It's much better than you had, even if the wood is slightly mismatched. It is a serviceable firearm now.

Agreed, that is a decent repair job.
My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

Definitely making lemonade out of the lemons Classic sent you.  As Justin Hell will attest to, you need to keep the pressure on them to make them do the right thing and give you back the handpick and the difference between the high grade and lower grade guns they've been selling.  There is no way that the gun should have been sold with the higher grade lot of guns they sold.  To have taken your $20 for the handpick just means the guys in the warehouse missed that broken stock twice; that is absolutely unacceptable.

I would suggest that you tell them you are going to call your CC company so they can get involved on your behalf if they (Classic) continue to be unwilling to make you whole on this deal and I suspect their tune will change right quick.

Screw Classic, they did that crap to me years ago with the Yugoslavian SKS rifles that had at that time.

The method Classic used to make good on my first one was to go to Apex, and pick out items I described being wrong, and tally up the total.  Mine looks as if it was used to beat someone over the head with the bayonet closed. The bayonet was bent over the stock ferrule, it's channel in the stock was cracked nearly to the magazine cutout...and the front vent slot's wood in the handguard was gone on both sides.  The firing pin was totally unsafe, as it was 'forked'...and likely would easily pierce a primer.   They sent links to a stripped and wrong stock, a gas tube that has been out of stock there as long as I have known of Apex's existence, not to mention it wasn't even a real gas tube, but a ribbed tube, akin to an NC Star tube with it's scope mount removed designed to not have a handguard at all....and a firing pin. About five bucks gravy for shipping and they came to a $90 refund....which after fees and such, it ended up being the $249 cracked stock special they had previously.  Fortunately, I already had all of the correct parts onhand. Although I am in the market for a two piece gas tube as it is borrowing one from a bubba gun.  I don't want to mess with fixing the correct one, because despite it being a beat to death ugly example. It is 100% numbers matching. In that state, it's a wall hangar....but with my parts...it looks like a late M21, inverted take down lever stock, and a French tickler handguard....and as a bonus, it is safe to fire.

I also had the benefit of ordering under the wife's name...as both of our IDs use a PO Box address, which apparently is illegal anyway, but our car title has both a PO Box and the physical address, and is in her name....so it's the only way we can buy guns.   So all of our communications were via me typing as Bernadette. :P

I like to think that the reason I got such a 'nice' example the second time around was due to Classic thinking I am a girl, who knows more about SKSs than they do.  With the huge jump in PW serials on the second, I think they dipped into another batch that they are not offering for sale at this time....you likely got the bottom of the barrel from the batch they were offering.

Classic used to sell gunsmith specials and i bought a few knowing exactly what was wrong.    I havent seen a gunsmith special from them since 2018 / early 2019

i did see a guy on their group whose stock fell apart when cleaning.  I sent him to numrich for a replacement stock  (40 dollars shipped. )  i picked one up also (in transit).   Guess since i fixed this one i need to find another sks in need of a stock. LOL

If this armors assistant is dead i hope they heard every curse word i used to describe them.    Every screw on the damn stock is off axis except for the one i just drilled for the sling mount.

Looks like ill need to fill with epoxy and then redrill to get the correct fitment.    Can you imagine those screws digging in after every shot

As unprofessional as classic was to screw you over like that, you've turned it into a neat project and the end result looks like it will be a nice shooter.
Kudos to you, now if you can get classic to refund you the money that they should you'll really be winning  thumb1

The Albanian replacement stock I have on one of mine has terrible fitment issues as well, the craftsmanship wasn't exactly top notch.  :(
