Intro from an Old Guy in the PNW - also date ?'s
« on: April 13, 2020, 10:53:32 PM »
Hi SKS fans. I just found this website. Cool..thanks for the member acceptance...!! Been a fan of these rifles for 30 years now.
In 1990 I bought two new in box rifles. One was a standard rifle with a nice blade bayonet, and the other a paratropper with the shorter barrel and a spike. I believe I ordered "select," or a hand picked(?), option that added $5 or $10ea I believe. After cleaning a ton of cosmoline I noticed this rifle had a unique s/n, starting with an alpha character followed by four numbers. Took it out and fired 5-10 rounds, cleaned it and has been put away since. The second SKS I ordered from the same source, (FFL friend buying these 10 at a time), was a Paratrooper with the shortened barrel, same "select" upgrade. This one has a cool s/n as well, but appears a newer rifle. This one gets some black furniture.

A couple of pix standard:

Any help identifying years on these? I believe the wood stocked rifles is a 1959, and a Sino..??
Not sure about the Para, 1976 if my research is correct..??

Also looking to value the older Sino. Would like to see it go to a new home.

Welcome from the dry side of Washington!  :)

Your short-barreled para was originally made as a standard Type 56 in 1976, as you surmised, then shortened before export to the US.

The “E” prefix letter gun is very nice, and from 1959-60  thumb1 I run across these nice letter guns occasionally but many of the letter guns came into the US from Albania ca. 2012-14 and are in rougher condition.

Welcome to the SKS-FILES from SW Missouri! Glad to have you join us! If you're a fan of the SKS, you're in the right place!

Two very fine Type 56"s! Looking forward to seeing more pics of your rifles. Were you able to keep the original wood stock for the Para model? Love to see pics of them in their original furniture as well as a good close-up pic of that arsenal stamp on your Para model the next time you have it out of the plastic stock.  thumb1  Always on the hunt for new clues. (and data to reinforce the old ones!)

The CJA import stamp sure has a lot of variations. This one looks closest to the CJA #1, except that the C has been restamped with a larger font "C" probably due to a light strike the first round. There are no periods in the stamp following Southfield and MI.  Also, no horizontal bar on the H of China. If this indeed was the first stamp that CJA used, it was in a "fluid" state of use, for sure.  :-\

Greetings from NM.  It looks like P32 has your original questions covered.   thumb1

I would guess that the para is out of arsenal /?1\ (/6 over 602\).  Not a terribly common arsenal at all, yours is the first year 21 gun I've seen though year 18 through 24 exist.  Still have yet to find a year 20 /?1\ gun either.  Thanks for sharing!  thumb1
