My dad used to use real Whale Oil-- in little yellow cans with a whale spouting on the label.
Then there was Hoppe's #9 solvent and gun oil.
Then Break Free CLP- great for cleaning and freeing up dirty actions.
For gun oil- whatever's available on the shelf when I run out.

For copper fouling I recommend you all try Wipe-Out bore cleaner foam. Zero brushing of the bore. Keeps the copper fouling under control with less scrubbing, fewer patches and elbow grease. Smells good.
As far as oil, there are many new gun oils and they're all pretty good.

I never saw whale oil, but my dads gun oil was in the traditional recangular metal can with a spout (like 3 in one)  It was called "Gun Oil"   i assume it was either Parker Hale or Bisley.
I use Outers gun oil because, thats what the store had? or it came in a cleaning kit? Who knows.

I’ll necropost here. I’m surprised no one mentioned Ballistol. Good for lots of things including corrosive stuff.

Well I still use the eezox as a final coat to put a little shine on the gun.

However as of late I've been using rand bore and bolt to clean with and then limb it up with rand clp.
On my ar I squirter a drop of 3in1 teflon oil in the two holes in the bolt carrier and move the bolt forward and back alot to work it in.  This makes a real slick action.  If I'm shooting it and I feel it needs lube I use geissele go juice.  As far as rust prevention if storing them for a long time I use lps2 or lps3.

For my ak and sks I use moly wheel bearing grease. It aureus great.
