Hi
« on: December 20, 2020, 08:11:45 PM »
So I just bought an SKS. Its a Norinco 56 built in 66 or 67. I live in the west I like 7.62x39 I used to have a Mini-30 I think my SKS is more accurate. I live in Idaho. Looking to do some Coyote and Wolf hunting

Hello and welcome from NH.The SKS can be pretty accurate. They are rugged to the extreme.Great for medium sized game hunting in my experience.Flatter shooting and harder hitting than a 30-30 imho. Maybe we can see some pics of yer Type 56.

Welcome from your neighbor to the west in south-central Washington.  :)

If it's a 1966 or 67 then it's an 11 or 12 million. Looks like one of the recent imports of mid to late 1960s Type 56s supplied to Albania by China 50+ years ago.

Welcome to the 'Files from SW Missouri, Sword of Симонова!

What kind of distances are you talking when you mentioned hunting coyote and wolf? You've got some big country up there. If you're taking 400+ yard shots you may not have much luck with 7.62x39. My eyes don't do well without optics after 100 yds and I don't shoot that caliber past 100 yds for practice either. That's a personal choice, though. Some guys have ranges that have the 200-400 yard setups. There's a lot of bullet drop at the longer ranges on the x39. If you're taking the wolves and coyotes at less than 100 yds, the SKS will be great.

Was your SKS still covered in the Cosmoline when you acquired it? Cleaning it up is great bonding time with your new firearm!  chuckles1

Not past 400 Yards but 200-300 yards we have some country that will let use hunt some shorter distances, Yes It was covered in a very thick layer of cosmoline it took about 5hrs and 5 cans of brake cleaner to get it cleaned up. But it shoots great now.
I am thinking about putting a PU scope on it and a fresh wooden/laminate stock on it? At some point sending the Trigger to Kivarri for sure as there is alot of take up in it.
