Title: battle damage Gewehr 88
Post by: hoopharted on March 15, 2021, 10:31:17 AM
at one point i had over 200 of these , im down to maybe 50 now , out of the arsenal i found a battle damaged example , it took a bullet right at the rear band , it breeched the shroud and the barrel itself as i can see light when siting the bore , i have never disassembled the rifle because i didnt want to dick with the originality of it , it was hanging on the wall of my gunroom for about 20 years , the last maintenance i decided to list it on GB and then got cold feet and yanked the auction early

Definitely a cool one  8) The bullet perforated the jacket and barrel on both sides. That is quite remarkable. Bad day for the rifle, but possibly a lucky day for the owner if the rifle took the worst of it.

The only thing similar I have is the stock of a MAS 36 that probably encountered "Front Toward Enemy" side of a Claymore while in VC/NVA hands.

Those aren't swabs, they're fleches from a miniature bow with a rubber band for a string, shot by miniature little men from Mars. rofl rofl rofl

You're likely correct. The former owner didn't need it anymore...

Pretty cool piece of history. Do you have any photo's of your "shrapnel butt"? :)

War is hell, plain and simple.. I have a few with damage, but these are the 2 worst, I'd say gruesome ones.

They look like normal Mosins.. but the solider carrying either of them, had a rough ending  :o

Blood etching on my Finnish capture '38 Tula, several collectors attributed to that, about the only part not etched is the last 4 to 6 inches of the barrel at the muzzle. The bolt, trigger, rear sight and spring are all Finnish replacements.

rofl  Hey, I'll have you know that those specialized firearms ballistics forensics tools cost a fortune (okay, they're just cotton swabs and they didn't cost much, but other than that I'm sticking to my story)

there was really no damage , just some small deeply embedded shards of metal  , i was afraid if i pulled them they would blow the wood out because i managed to get a pair of pliers on one piece and it wasnt going to come easy so i didnt press the issue , it was easier to flush them in , i got a couple nasty cuts from them , you dont handle a wall hanger allot so i would forget about the shards and next thing you know i was leaking

Another...  from the other side of the world, a Mum'ed Type 99 Arisaka, not of damage persay.... but of the damage it could have possibly inflicted. In sunlight it has small flecks of metal embedded in the wood/finish.

The groove where the bolt seats, your fingernails follow when you cycle the bolt, so someone needing a manicure badly shot alot of rounds through it.

Cool. That explanation of the groove never would have occurred to me but sounds plausible.

Around $300-400. You might luck out and find a late production Type 99 for $200-300. I think the late production ones are cool but they bring less. It's funny, because late production K98k rifles often bring a premium...collector psychology  rofl

thanks , yea i was thinking the same thing about the K98 thing  , so mum in tact adds allot of value or nominal value

Had a couple of guys in my unit find a pistol still attached to the owner in Lebanon.  Bad JuJu happened to whoever possessed the pistol from then on.  One caught a fatal round while there, another serious injuries.  The last had an accident that blew off his left hand a few years later.  The pistol disappeared after that and was not missed.
