Yugo 59 with a Norinco Sporter Stock?
« on: May 28, 2025, 03:20:39 PM »
Thank you for letting me join.  I keep coming across D, M, Soprter and NR Norincos so when I was doing my usual rounds I came across this oddity.  It Appears to be a C Series (1967?) Yugo 59 before they did the grenade launchers.  IT looks like someone fitted it to a Norinco Sporter stock, based on the black sections.  Comes with an AK mag and I am very curious if it cycles fine.  Has anyone heard of converting a Yugo to take AK mags before?

Looks like the importer may have done the deed. Is it scrubbed of numbers everywhere? PAX

The receiver cover pin and the bolt have the same serial.  Bolt carrier and everything on the stock have no serial.  No stripper ears on the bolt carrier either.

I would guess that's Bubba's handiwork, albeit a very nicely done conversion.  They even installed the matching handguard!  I agree that it definitely looks like a Sporter stock with the slab sides and rubber grip at the thumbhole.  If you wind up getting it and can strip it from the stock, look to see how and where they opened up the bottom of the receiver to allow for the AK mag to seat.  If they milled it and took the time to reblue the in-the-white areas, bubba was a true craftsman!

I'd assume that it should cycle just fine.  The gas system on a M59 is the same as a T56.  If it was an M59/66 then you might have issues.  As for feeding rounds, the stock determines the position of the magazine, so as long as the receiver has enough clearance for the magazine to seat all the way in, it should be in the correct position with the feed lips angled correctly.  I would assume whoever built it tested it out and tweaked things as necessary if there were issues.

Not sure how much $ they saved doing the conversion over just buying a complete sporter.  I guess they may have been one to just do it because it was a project.  This is a better pic of the magwell.  It does look so far that they milled and blued it.  But I will get it and get it apart and get better pics.  One thing to note on the pic of the back of the receiver, looks like the lower end of the cover goes below the line of the wood.

Honestly not bad at all.  Here's the bottom of a MC-5D that the exporter looks to have cut with a dull butter knife:

Really doesn't take a ton to get those feed lips and the sides of the AK magazine to fit, but it is definitely a job for an endmill.

Having done the conversion myself I agree with RM. that looks like a post-import mod.

Although mine was to type 81 mags, not AKM.
