RC S/42K K98k
« on: May 12, 2019, 10:45:09 PM »
I couldn't pass up this Russian Capture K98k a few weeks ago. The code is rare, only 17K K98k rifles made at Mauser Oberndorf in 1934. Compare that to 260K to 670K in 1939-1944.

It's nice that it has no crossed rifle marking on the receiver ring, given that the code is the main attraction, nor any peened markings. It does have the horizontal serial number on the incorrect Steyr made stock, the dip blue finish of all metal, the electropenciled numbers on bolt and other parts, complete mix of parts numbers and makers, and of course an import mark, all of which are RC indicators.

The bore is very good, which is a bit surprising given it's age and that it ended up on the Russian front, where it was picked up where it was dropped, captured or seized from stores.

Barrel blank lot and maker number. Made by Döhlen

The easier solution is to get rid of some of those extras you've got Jon!  I'll take some of that worthless scrap iron off your hands!  No need to even pay me, the satisfaction that I'm helping you overcome your problems is reward enough! chuckles1

That is a generous offer Joe, although I may have to cogitate on that for a while. I'll get back to you in about three decades

I had to look up "cogitate".  Not an oft used RM-ism there.  think1

That is a nice K98 there though.  One of these days I'm hoping to get one of those.  (and a G43, and an SVT-40, and ...)

Thanks! Even the lowly RCs have increased in value at $500 plus.

A variant on the term cogitate is "codgertate". Defined as an older gentleman b****ing and moaning while he contemplates his conflicting opinion on a subject.

I would offer it to the Smithsonian on consignment.    thumb1

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

Have you considered a slight "steam" job to raise the dents? Not having it in hand, I can't tell if it is really needed.

I'm unlikely to ever try that on a milsurp. The stock is in good shape. The laminates with their cross-grain layers generally seem more resistant to deep dents.

I’d say that it’d be well worth the effort and that I’d be happy to help if you run across such a stash at your neighbors Quonset hut  ;) :))

That's probably what the Samco warehouse looked like during the bankruptcy proceedings!  dance2

That's a lot of rifles there.  Easily 100 rifles per pile and I count 50+ piles on the left and 32+ piles on the right.  8200+ rifles would take quite a few man hours to refurbish!
