"New" Commercially Altered "SKS-KD"
« on: February 17, 2016, 04:12:45 PM »
This one is hitting the Canadian market.  They are being built by a company called Kodiak Defence.  The specs are as follows...

1.Russian SKS Rifle
2. ATI Strike Force Stock, new model , not to be confused with old one.
3. AK mag (Israeli made)
4. Kodiak Defence Top Rail
5. Barrels are threaded to accept CZ 858 (vz58) muzzle brakes/hiders
6. Bayonets removed

Initial thoughts. Full rail makes front sight useless.  Bolt carrier appears to be commercially refinished in the pics to black (not by refurb).  Likely a molot sample out of Russia given recent import trends, but not confirmed.

Mostly it is ease of manipulation.  Most mag carriers are designed to hold 30 round mags.  Hard to retrieve a 5 round short mag from any mag pouch.

Looks count too.

Plus a great many people do travel to the US to shoot competitively or for sport, or for hunting.  Those that do, generally take a cordless drill and a hand held rivet tool with them.  Unpin once in the US if legal, pin before returning.

Ahh, makes perfect sense!  I hadn't thought of that.   think1

I guess stubby 5 rounders would be pretty tough to handle.

That and most supply of magazines still come from outside this country.  Easier to buy and pin, than redesign and manufacture.

And I'm not a huge fan of these either.  When the dealer started hinting at these, I thought it was going to be some sort of Chinese import of a found batch of commercial Chinese SKS-D type rifles.  Sadly no.

The only project I was ever really considering was a SKS into a Type 81 clone.  Now that they are on the way, I see no need.  I prefer original milsurp SKS designs anyways.

Hork, spit!

Your brethren up there could screw up an anvil with a rubber mallet.   bat1

Plenty of mall ninjas up there that I doubt travel with firearms to the US for any reason.

I'm glad your a cut above the rampant idiocy.   thumb1.

If the front sight is useless, and the bayonet is removed....why not chop it and then thread it....or at least remove the front sight?
I kind of like the newer ATI buttstocks...despite them not improving the rest of the stock. If I was going to do a commercial rebuild, I would go with the Archangel though...

We've all seen way worse looking SKS mods. The thing that rubs me the wrong way is they are messing up Russian SKSs with this stuff. If they were using Chinese or Yugos I would say it's kinda cool. I know, up there Russians are cheap but in the big picture far fewer Russians were made so it's still a shame. Or are you saying these are new production SKS Ds out of Molot? Can't really see how that is profitable taking production away from building more AKs.

I have heard bad things about the Archangel stock but I've never seen one first hand. I wonder how clean and reliable the mag conversion is. Is it just as good as a real D? Just out of curiosity, what are they asking for these?
It's sad that the motto of young Americans isn't "live free or die" or "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country" or even "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country". Instead their motto is "pee yourself, shelter in place and cry for help". Pathetic.

No we have been getting molot sks as of late and the preservation quality just isn't as nice as what we were getting 2 or 3 years ago out of the Ukraine and Poland. Those stocks have either been redeployed/limited (Ukraine) or dried up quickly (Poland war stock of SKS45).

These have been modified after import into Canada. Not done by moot.

I don't think it takes much from the Ak production, they were producing both weapons together back in the '50s. They already have the tooling.

Not my cup of tea for certain, but they are plentiful and cheap up there so why not?

I do have a question for you FL.  Seeing as how the limit is 5 rounds for a rifle magazine (and 10 for an unmodified pistol magazine), why do I always see these ridiculous 30 round magazines poking out the bottom of Canadian bubba SKSs like this one?  Is it pinned and truly just 1/5 to 1/3 full?  I understand the "you're one weld away from a full magazine should that need ever arise" argument (which of course is highly illegal up in .ca), but it just seems wasteful to me.  Why not just utilize 5 or 10 rounders in these things?

It is an interesting question, I don't know if it's China or New Zealand who modifies the factory box mag, but, someone must make a 5 rd SKS box mag. In New Zealand that looks like all they sell with, the "stubby 5rd magazine". However, they are allowed magazines holding only 7 rounds as per legislation, with the exception of .22lr, thats 15 rds.

There are 5 round mags. Not common but they fit flush pretty much to the stock. We just pin ours through the bottom or weld a metal leg to the bottom of the follower to limit it's travel.

Some methods are very clean, others not so much.

Now I remember hearing about the SKS shotgun and the new production SKSs but I didn't realize they were actually doing it.  The price of the SKSs on the Molot website is between 9500 and 12300 rubles if I am reading that right. It seems like that converts to about $124 to $160. Those look like regular old stock Russian SKSs though, not seeing these new looking SKS Ds there. Still, nice guns for cheap if only we could get them over here, not to mention SVT-40s for $260. Sigh, why can't we get Russian arms anymore? Stupid government.

Militia not making these. What I'm saying is the molot guns are getting imported to Canada,  and are likely the ones being bubba'd into the KD.

This isn't a molot build.

I give them credit for trying something new using an SKS....but that's about it.

The stock is hideous, and looks like every other plastic SKS stock.

I agree about the FSB. Remove it or shave it down. Especially the bayo lug. The gun looks incomplete.

It looks like they are using an MC5D style ak mag release. That will be fine for the 5 round limited mags, but try putting a full 30 round mag in there and I bet you it will stop dropping out of the gun. Too much weight for the MC5D mag release (double negative angles).
