Title: First dumb question
Post by: Blackbird92 on November 03, 2016, 09:16:11 PM
I have photobucket and wanted to put an avatar picture up.  I can't make it work at all. Someone want to try and walk me through it.  Reasonably computer literate but having trouble with this.

Avatars have to be smaller than 166x166 or they won't display I believe.  One of the quirks of the SMF forums.   If using photobucket, use the 'direct link' button on photobucket to copy and paste the direct URL into the avatar in your account settings.

For example my avatar direct link is: http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q647/jelucer/omc_trans.png

To display it I go to profile->Forum Profile and then select "Specify avatar by URL" and then paste that text into the box labeled "Specify your own avatar by URL. (e.g.: http://www.mypage.com/mypic.gif)"

I have found Flickr to be much easier, as it will automatically resize photos for you. Upload the photo to Flickr. Click the right pointing arrow to share, choose BBCode, in the box below choose your size. The only tricky part is filtering out their advertising/link coding from the actual URL. To do that:

Right click and copy the highlighted link they give you. Then paste it into notepad or even the forum textbox and weed out the junk. You want the URL that looks like "https://www.flickr.com/yadayadayadaetcetc/123456789.jpg"

Delete out all the rest of the junk except that. If you are uploading an avatar, choose the 150x150 square size, do the same as above, except trim the "s" off of "https" Boards are quirky about the "s" for some reason.
