Title: M28-76
Post by: Phosphorus32 on October 03, 2019, 07:17:11 AM
This is a (dead sexy) ASEV1 made M28-76 match rifle built on an 1899 Tula receiver, and chambered in 7.62x53R, of course (yes, 7.62x54R works as well). This is the penultimate Mosin based rifle built by the Finns. Only the TKIV 85 DMR/sniper rifle, comes later, and they aren't available in the US. There is no other platform that has had as long a service life with the same receiver/bolt combination, as the Mosin Nagant series of rifles.

ASEV1 is an abbreviation for Asevarikko 1 (Armory or Arsenal 1), which is located in Kuopio, about 400km NNE of Helsinki. I believe this is the same as Kuopion Asevarikon (Kuopio Arms Depot) an underground armory first established on July 18, 1918 and used for arms production and storage in the Winter War.

The M28-76 match rifles were made from M28-30 rifles and have the front and rear sights characteristic of the M28-30. The stock is a massive piece of birch fashioned into a match rifle stock with an ergonomic right hand grip, left side cheek rest and a rail accepting aluminum "groove" on the bottom of the foreend. They have an excellent two stage trigger with a crisp reproducible break at 1.5 kg. The bolt is butter smooth in the action and it shoots very nice. Many of these came with diopter sights, but this only has the standard sights. There is also an unobtanium scope mount and scope compination for the unique scope rail, but they would cost as least as much as the rifle if one could be found.

This one has an MPKK sticker on the right side of the buttstock, which is an abbreviation for Maanpuolustuskorkeakoulu, the Finnish National Defense University. This is the Finnish military college that trains officers for the Defense Forces and Border Guard. The main campus is located in Santahamina, Helsinki, Suomi.

The mediocre 100 yd 5 shot group with Norma 150gr soft point at the end includes a nice group of 3 showing that it obviously has potential if I can just do my part consistently. Time getting used to it and concentration with rested eyes ought to tighten it up.

 thumb1 thumb1  Yea..... I'm not alone....

I remember when those came in.. I got one from Empire Arms....I would hate to try to buy one today :o  I've seen between 900 to a 1000 quoted as to the numbers imported of these beasts. Defiantly not your everyday run of the mill Mosin....much less your everyday.. Finnish Mosin.  Mine haas the scope rail... and the diopter target sight setup.

Yeah, not real common but they are real cool  8)  ;) One popped up on the Gunboards WTS forum and I worked a fair deal.

You can still find the old Empire Arms ad for these.

I covet your diopter sights  drool2

In all seriousness, that's a pretty nifty looker.  Too bad they didn't make them for us southpaws!

Thanks Joe!  Yeah, the stock couldn't be more wrong for a left-hander. Pretty comfortable for me though.  thumb1
