My first YUGO
« on: April 06, 2021, 05:27:32 PM »
Saw this rifle go up for sale late last week on a local site. When I read the words soaked in cosmoline I was hooked. Came with a sling, pouch, oiler etc. Tore it down this afternoon and have the small parts soaking. I'll finish that up tomorrow and hopefully have it at the range Thursday.

Found out today the seller is a member here. I'll let him chime in if he wants to.

Nice grab Lowell,
My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

Nice Yugo, Lowell! This is the color of the wood on my Cherry's Import Yugo. I've always wondered if it was original color or if the previous owner had oiled the wood and made it darker? Most Cherry's Import's seem to have light colored wood on them.  dntknw1

Thanks for the comments guys.
On the wood color. I brushed on mineral spirits on everything and came back 15 minutes later and the stock had dried out a bit. Color was gone for the most part. Had a blond/white look to it. Got the heat gun out and started getting the cosmo to start bubbling out of the wood and the color started coming back from the cosmo I guess. If there was stain it wasn't much on this rifle. More cleaning today.

Yugo's didn't stain or varnish/coat their wood, they used oil. I refinished one once using Tung oil. Really liked it. I think they use a different oil thought more like linseed oil. Someone else will know better than me.

Well that explains the raw finish I ended up with. Here's a pic. Going to try my hand at dent removal with an iron. They don't bother me one bit but wanna try something new and then some LIGHT sanding.

From my searches it's either BLO or tung oil. I found both at the hardware store this morning and got the tung oil. Also picked up some stain call gunstock which is sorta reddish. I'll try mixing the two and test inside the stock first.

I think it all depends on when it was done.. linseed oil seems to be the usual for Mausers and SKSs... But then at times, some were just so slathered in the storage grease, that actually became the finish, which I guess technically, is still an oil finish. I have also read, some were just issued and handed to soldiers unfinished and the hand oils and other oils they used became the finish, I actually have one that's almost black in color.
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

Well it's all back together. A little stain and two coast of tung oil. Don't know if I like the shine yet. I'm going to shoot it and may decide to knock the sheen of with a little steel wool.

The rifle is in amazing shape. None of my other SKS's fit together this well. Astronut sold me a nice rifle.

I know nothing about woodworking but if anyone wants to try to bring a stock back here is what worked on THIS stock:

Brushed on hardware store paint thinner and let sit overnight.
Next morning wiped down and then more thinner while I cleaned the soaked metal parts.
Wiped down then started with the heat gun. The cosmo will bubble up. Just wipe and heat over and over.
This is the part you may NOT want to do. I sprayed the stock with a cheap dollar store bleach cleaner. I thought the stock was clean until I did this. Heat and wipe down again.
Let dry overnight. I have a dehumidifier in my gun room.
LIGHTLY sanded stock with 220 grit sandpaper.
Bought Minwax gunstock stain and Minwax tung oil.
Mixed one part stain to two parts tung oil and brushed on. Waited 10 minutes and wiped off liquid.
After 24 hours used 0000 steel wool to smooth stock out and wiped down stock with thinner. Brushed on straight tung oil, wait 10 minutes and wipe off.
24 hours later stock looked nice with a flat finish. Brushed on another coat of tung oil. Waited 10 minutes and wiped off. After 24 hours a bit more shine.

Well done! I'm gonna follow your 'recipe' on a shellac-covered Russian stock. The metal is in perfect shape. Hopefully, it'll come out as nice as yours.
