That's a solid condition M59 there. I doubt you'll find one in much better shape. To degrease or not, age old question.

Are you going to shoot it?  I personally would clean it so I could address any hidden corrosion issues that I might find, but to each his own. Good catch man.  thumb1

Hidden corrosion?     That thing looks like a bug forever sealed on amber.    :o

I think it is too pretty to remain slathered in that stuff...the condition alone should bring a high value to this as an M59 alone...I don't think that cleaning it would reduce it's value by much....if at all.

You could clean up the exterior for handling and display, and leave the innards all gunked up...and still be able to state... 'still in cosmoline' should you resell.

I am trying not to let my desire to see her full beauty prejudice my statement. :)

Hidden corrosion?
To degrease or not, age old question.

Absolutely gosh darn right....age old question and hidden corrosion.....yeah, that sucks too..because it can and does exist.

I have several still in grease.. one, I have mentioned, the Cherrys imported Yugoslavian M48BO i bought. Cherrys had the goods back in the day, like Mitchells, only not molested, faked, restamped and worked over..  It's the bottom Mauser, and was slimy and grease covered when I bought it, I found the exterior was pristine, the bolt was in mint condition. The barrel had a pound of grease in it..so it was sealed......or so I though. I cleaned and cleaned.. Eventually the barrel started spitting out little 8mm shredded rusty rat nest patches... WTF. so upon further inspection, even though the barrel was packed with grease, the bore is really rough, enough to shred cloth patches.. Thankfully, it still shoots pretty decent....but, it's probably no where as good as it could be.

Now everyone claims the M48BO was a contract for export only rifle and are all like new..so did someone shoot it and pump it full of grease to sit for years, or did the grease fail to protect the metal. This much metal damage couldn't have been done here, as it came out of a sealed Cherrys box.

And no eyeballing my Vz.24  bat1

I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

I said I was an addict........I didn't say I had a problem

If you want to shoot it, clean it. It's a nice looking refurbished M59, not an untouched original.

If you don't want to shoot it, inspect and if it looks as nicely refurbished under the wood as the bluing above the wood would lend one to believe, leave it in the grease...but at least get the glop off of the bayonet so it doesn't leave grease splotches on everything it contacts  rofl

oH mAN  :o  Look, You can smell it !  rofl.. Beautiful M59 ! CLASSIC !  If you clean it up I always wait for a hot summer day. Disassemble and stick all the parts in a garbage bag out in the hot sun to ooze the cosmoline. Winter time makes things really difficult.

You did good. Really good. I also like to let cosmoline soak into the wood really good before wiping it down. Preserves the wood and makes the safe smell like Milsurp everytime you open it : )  Ha ha ha  Go Matchka !!!

Gonna remove the cosmoline - once the temps warm up. 1. Checking for hidden corrosion and 2. Just to look. There's plenty of modern preservatives I can use to spray and wipe down the ol' thing.
Any inputs on YOM?
