Model 1895 Chilean Navy Long Rifle
« on: October 25, 2021, 10:13:09 PM »
This is one of 500 M1895s produced for the Chilean Navy. These remain slightly mysterious, since there are both Ludwig Loewe and DWM marked rifles that are known. Perhaps they were made across the December 31, 1896 (last day as Ludwig Loewe) January 1, 1897 (became DWM) boundary. Others have posited that they were scrubbed and marked internally in Chile. The receiver on mine doesn't have any obvious signs of scrubbing, though it could have been carefully scrubbed and rust blued at a Chilean arsenal. I don't know the answer, but it's a rather rare variation. The Navy rifle has the fouled anchor with a star above it instead of the standard Chilean M1895 crest found on the army rifles.

Chambered in 7x57mm Mauser, with a 29" barrel.

It came with the nicest Chilean bayonet I've ever seen. It still had semi-hardened grease on it when I got it.

US provenance: this rifle was in Mauser collecting legend John Wall's collection. He traded it to John B. many years ago, since it was a duplicate in his collection. I bought it from John B. via the Gunboards WTS/WTT sub-forum a month ago, passing ownership to another Jon  ;)

Thanks!

I do have quite a few different types of ammo floating about. I need 55 types in order to feed all of my rifles, pistols and shotguns, but I don't have 5 of the oddball rifle rounds. Jon, I have 7 of the rifle and 9 of the pistol.  I'd add .455 Eley and 9mm Largo to mine.  I think you forgot 9mm Browning on yours, though wink1.

P.S.  Sorry to almost derail this thread.

Ah-ha, you're correct. Need to feed my M/1907.

.455 Eley, that's an interesting one  :)

I also have a couple of instances where I have the ammo, but no firearm. When you buy a bargain lot of ammo, it happens. I have a few old boxes of 9x23mm Steyr and 8x22mm Nambu...but no pistols.

P.S. No problem on the derail...adding my list was me embracing the derailment  chuckles1

BTW, back to the Chilean Navy M1895 for a moment, there were ~500 made, and at least 4% of those made their way to the US. In other words, there are only 20 on the Gunboards serial number list. My No. 15 is the lowest serial number.

Those are cool little factoids that make firearms collecting very fulfilling!  Nice get on this one Jon.  You going to shoot it?  (I assume not as nice as it looks, but hey, some guys shot *every* single gun that passes through their door.)

Thanks guys!

Shoot it? Yeah, honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about shooting it, although I do have a regular (Army, with the standard Chilean crest) M1895 Chilean long rifle that would probably make more sense to use as a shooter.

I really like the old peace time (in Germany) contract Mausers. They were made carefully and they still had plenty of quality walnut for making the stocks. There's really nothing better than walnut for rifle stocks.
