What's the best Bullet types for a full auto MG 08
« on: September 16, 2020, 07:48:07 PM »
My buddy has a Class 3 Maxim MG08 Chambered in 7.62 x 54r and he's too busy to figure out which grain bullets work best, so I thought I ask for him in here. He probably has a mix of ammo for it including a bunch of light ball. I'd imagine the heavier ball yellow tipped 54r would be better but I'm not sure. Also, will running light ball run differently? Is there anything he should avoid running in it and will modern made 54r run fine?  Many questions, so Thanks

IIRC some had told me several years ago in a similar conversation that the heavyball is what is used in the machine guns.

A 1918 DWM, so was it captured by the Russians from the Germans and converted from 7.92x57 to 7.62x54R, or was it rechambered here in the States?

Cool as heck!  8)

The only Maxim I ever fired was chambered in 54r.

The owner of that MG used heavy ball exclusively.

Heavy ball would be a closer approximate to the ballistics for the sight.  The 7.92x57 198gr ball is around 2500fps out of a 23.5"barrel while the 7.62x54 180gr ball is around 2700fps out of a 29" barrel.  Light ball 7.62x54 150gr is around 3000fps.  Good luck finding heavy ball, though.  I haven't seen any in years.

I wonder how 208gr x54r SP that WOLF and Brown Bear are known to make would work. That is actually closer to the gr weight of the 8mm
