Title: Tavor 7, Israeli Door Kicker
Post by: Phosphorus32 on December 15, 2020, 06:20:10 PM
In the midst of Hanukkah it seems timely to post this rifle that I picked up a couple of months ago for my birthday. The Maccabees probably could have put an IWI Tavor 7 with a Trijicon ACOG to effective use a couple of millennia ago thumb1

This is my first rifle with an ACOG and I am hooked on the optic. Both eyes open. Bright red center cross-hair in the BDC reticle Of course the compact bullpup design chambered in the full powered 7.62 NATO is darn nice too. It has a good trigger and the weight balance is definitely aft. I find it comfortable with that weight really keeping the butt planted in the shoulder and the straight back recoil impulse minimizing climb. It's very easy to break down for cleaning with just three captive pins to pop, two for the trigger pack and one more for the bolt group.

That's the bad thing about being a lefty, Bull pups rarely work for us. Nice Tavor thought.

Nice to see your back to your usual "few months before posting" mode. rofl rofl

These are completely ambidextrous. Need to field strip and switch the ejection port and bolt (conveniently labeled L/R parts). It can be done without visiting a unit armorer or gunsmith. Apparently the earlier Tavors in 5.56 were also switch hitters but far more difficult to make the switch.

Questions:
How much? How long is it?Looks to be short of the US legal length for a "rifle"?
Beautiful firearm.

Chiming in just cause I recently saw them up on Classic. I know it has a 20" barrel so I would assume it to be 30" + overall length. I recall the 5.56 and 7.62x39 versions were $1899.00 + so I imagine this one is $2.1k or more with the ACOG on it.

Thanks Marcus!  thumb1

List price for the Tavor 7 is $2099, but I bought it at my LGS (Talos Tactical) for $1843 (cash price) + tax. My LGS hasn't been gouging, even though they easily could.

The 3.5x35 Trijicon ACOG .308 BDC lists at $1605, but I got mine at the same LGS with the $145 Bobro mount attached (and the original Trijicon mount in the box) for $970 + tax. It was previously owned but didn't have a scratch or any dust on it.

Overall, it's certainly an expensive set-up but a great performer in its role. It's not a sniper rifle, but a good hard-hitting CQB rifle, not that I have delusions about being an operator. I'm really pleased with the ACOG. Issues with the trigger in the earlier 5.56x45 Tavors have been resolved with this latest full powered 7.62 NATO version.

The barrel is 16.5" and OAL is 28", so it is not an SBR. It's in the stock configuration from IWI. They're available in all black and OD green as well.

No, I don't work for Tavor  rofl

A beauty. Too bad it’s an “assault weapon” around here. Every time I look at my featureless AR it makes me a little sad.

Huh, I thought all the 7s were 20" barrels, learn something new every day. Sounds like you got a heck of a deal there Jon.

Yeah, California (I assume) laws are tough on AR aesthetics and a slight degradation of function for law-abiding citizens (though meaningless from the mass shooter's standpoint, since he'll just bypass those features).

NY. In terms of "features" things here are even worse than in CA. Any threaded barrel is a "feature", so no muzzle breaks for us. Many folks have mags pinned but looking at their struggles with jams, loading, etc. I chose function over form. And yes, laws like that don't make anyone safer. Just a major pain in our law-abiding butts.

I like that, Phos!  I'd never been much impressed with the bullpup design. I suppose it may have been all the do-it-yourself bullpup "creations" I'd seen in the past years that turned me off towards them. But I like this one! I like IWI weapons anyway. UZI's always had my attention. This Tavor looks like it's well made and finish looks tight all around.

Does the butt stock adjust for length at all? It doesn't look like it would, but I've never held one, so I don't know.  dntknw1

Does it use a Tavor-only magazine or are they interchangeable with any other 7.62x51 magazine? How's magazine cost and availability?

Thanks for posting this up, Phos!  I've been eyeing another Model A UZI, so It'll be a while before getting "the next one" after the UZI. We'll see...

I want a Henry in .357 magnum, too. I bought my wife a S&W Model 656 .357 mag when we first got together. I need to get "her" a matching rifle, caliber-wise, right?  ;)  :)  thumb1  I just know that down deep, somewhere, she really wants a Henry!  chuckles1  :)   I know I do!   chuckles1

Thanks FC!

The stock length isn’t adjustable. I’m 5’11” and I find it comfortable. As a bullpup, it definitely has a different feel to it.

The magazines are cheap, reliable and readily available Magpuls designed to fit the AR-10 family of rifles.

Thanks!

Good score, that’s a variety of 7.62 NATO that I don’t have. I did find a couple of different lot numbers of M118 at an LGS last week, so I grabbed 8 boxes of each.

Not trying to change the subject here, (BUT), isn't the Ruger Ranch in 5.56x55 IDENTICAL (in bullet size/caliber/power/etc? BUT, the Ruger is legal while the AR15 is considered an "Assault Rile". I guess the law makers still think "AR15" means "(A)ssault (R)ifle? Aren't they familiar with "ArmaLite" brand? Or, are they still hooked on "it's a mean, scary looking gun. And should banned".
/ (ˈɑːməlaɪt) / noun. trademark a lightweight high-velocity rifle of various calibres, capable of automatic and semiautomatic operation.

The Ruger Ranch is a bolt action rifle available in 5.56x45mm but I’m guessing you meant the Ruger Mini 14 which is also chambered in 5.56 and is semiautomatic. The “assault weapons” bans now in effect in 10 of the 50 states all vary. I’m most familiar with Washington State’s AWB, which is similar to California’s, but worse in many ways. There is a list of 62 specifically named firearms and then a long list of features. Some models of the Ruger Mini 14 and Mini 30 (7.62x39) would still be available for legal purchase under the current AWB language. No, it clearly is not logical  rofl

https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2023-24/Pdf/Bills/Session%20Laws/House/1240-S.SL.pdf#page=1

My purchase of the Tavor 7 occurred a couple of years before our AWB but I purchased many other SA rifles before April 25, 2023.

A federal AWB doesn’t stand a chance right now with the divided control of our bicameral legislature. I’m encouraged by the latest ruling by Judge Benitez in District Court against the CA AWB as being unconstitutional. I’m expecting the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn that, and hopefully SCOTUS will take it up and side with Benitez in ruling it unconstitutional. That would be a landmark case and would overturn the WA AWB since it is even more restrictive.
