Owned a few in my day!
« on: January 12, 2019, 08:36:02 AM »
Hello everyone.  I'm Rick.  I live and work in the southeast U.S.  I'm a Peace Officer/FireFighter at a regional commercial airport.  Back in the '80s I owned a Soviet-made SKS, purchased from a fellow sailor who was shipping home and didn't want it.  I loved that gun!  I shot steel silhouettes, legally harvested wild boar, and even a coast  Black-Tail Deer.  I eventually gave it to my son, who has dragged it to Texas and Alaska and back while serving in the Army.  About 15 years ago I picked up a Chinese SKS from a local gunshop in northwest Washington State.  The stock was broken, so I put a(at the time) new composite Dragunov-style stock on.  This led to replacing the bayonet with a bipod, replacing the original magazine with a 75-round drum, and afixing a non-powered Soviet side-mount scope!  Prior to moving down to where I'm currently living I gave that rifle to my youngest son, and he still has it.
So the other day I was in a local pawn-shop and spied a fairly dirty, dinged up SKS.  I offered $150 and brought it home.  It was missing the sling, the bayonet, the cleaning rod, and had a horrible plastic 30-rnd "AK/AR" style magazine.  It's been disassembled and cleaned, and I've EBay'd all the missing pieces to return it to original.  Once they're all in I'm going to strip and refinish the stock then reassemble it to correct condition.  I'm lucky that all the serial numbers match.  Unfortunately, the magazine SN won't match but I'm not too put out about that.  I'll be happy to return it to good condition, and to give it a home between my AR-15 and my Winchester 70 in 375 H&H!
I entered all it's relevant information into the SKS database on this website.  If you're interested in that stuff the SN is 1639966, from 'factory' 316.  Once it's returned to it's correct configuration I'll send in some photos!

Welcome.. thumb1  pictures are always welcome...especially before and after when unbubbaing a SKS. It warms the heart to see one go back to it's standard configuration.

Welcome Rick! Thanks for posting. That stock looks good to me. I agree that the RPK wannabe magazine looks a bit ridiculous...of course I like mine all original.

Enjoy the site!

Rgr that, IIOI (if I owned it) I'd leave the stock alone.

The reason I was going to strip/stain/refinish the stock is because the 'shellac'(?) or whatever was used has deteriorated.  It's flaky in places, and even somewhat sticky in places.

Hello, Rick and welcome. As most people will tell you it's your gun do as you please. However, these guys won't steer you wrong their advice is from their years of knowledge. I ask them questions all the time and I listen to their recommendations 99.5% of the time. The percentage I don't is because my mimd goes 500 mph with work and everything else going on and I have a raging case of ADHD. But mostly because I forget little things sometimes I'm in learning overload with my new found hobby. Basically I'm saying if they recommend something it's for a reason. But in the end it's all up to you. Good luck.

"Thank You!" to everyone who's welcomed me to the site.  I've posted about a few of my rifles, and I may add a few posts concerning my pistols and revolvers.  I'm glad I found this site, as it appears to be research/fact driven as opposed to "that's the way it's always been" type thinking.  I look forward to reading and contributing!

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

The reason I was going to strip/stain/refinish the stock is because the 'shellac'(?) or whatever was used has deteriorated.  It's flaky in places, and even somewhat sticky in places.

I have used lemon oil to clean up sticky stocks, usually a good wipe down takes care of it.. Some that are really nasty, I've used goop creamy hand cleaner and just keep working on it. Neither will damage the finish in my experience.
