Title: Books and Media sources?
Post by: 100Acre on January 12, 2019, 06:14:09 PM
I'm looking for books on SKS collecting and history besides the flimsy little things you see at gun shows or on amazon. I did just order the ? Soviet Book of small arms and ammunition by Bolotin and am patiently awaiting its arrival. In the mean time I'm looking for other books on Mosins, Nagant Pistols, SVT 40's and SKS's. Preferably in English. There was one site someone recommended but most of the books were in Russian and or no longer available. I'd be interested in some of those printed in other languages at least for the pictures- Shows I'm a man...Grog need picture book! Lol.
I recently picked up a few copies of Rifles Of the White Death by Douglas Bowser and have 2 extra if anyone wants a copy for cheap or to trade. I have also seen the website rdgunbooks as well but he is out of most stuff I was looking for or he was last time I checked. Anyway I appreciate any and all responses. thanks

There is one that will pop up... The SKS Carbine by Joe Poyer and Steve Kehaya...I have a copy...somewhere...  it contains pretty good basic information on individual parts and pieces.. some of the historical information is questionable and speculative in my opinion, some information has been found to be out of date.

Some books are hard to do, ones like Lugers, Mausers and Finnish Mosins not much changes over time, when your dealing with China who wont release information, one piece of new information can render a book inaccurate.

The White Death.. thats always one I wanted to check out.. The Finn's...they were some ballsy people and make great arms.

D. N. Bolotin has another interesting book:

'Советское стрелковое оружие за 50 лет : каталог'
Д.Н. Болотин

published in Leningrad in 1967.

There's an English translation of the book: 'Fifty Years of Soviet Small Arms, a catalog'. Unfortunately both the original Russian book and the English translation are hard to find now.

There is precious little reference information on SKS colecting and even less on SKS history. You'll be disappointed at what's out there believe me.  There are, however books that tangentially relate to these subjects. Look for published works discussing Sino Soviet relations at the beginning of the Cold War, other related arms such as the Kalashnikov Avtomat or Makarov pistol (Fred Datig has an excellent work on the PM), and there are also many works on the Chinese military and it's modernization that touch on the manufacture of arms back in the late 50's.  Probably about the best you're going to do.
