Title: Dumb****s at photobucket
Post by: running-man on June 30, 2017, 07:52:49 AM
As you may have noticed, photobucket has recently changed their terms of service. They no longer allow linking of photos from their site to 3rd party websites. This board will soon not have many photos showing as more users accounts are 'updated'.  This especially sucks for me because all the FAQs, HOWTOs, Trinity gun S/Ns, and all my posts are served from there.  We will have to see what other options are available and devide what we want to do. In the meantime, if you come across an admin post w/o photos, that's tge reason why.

Good job photobucket!  hunter)

Meh it's a free site, you get what you pay for. The no notice that things were majorly changing is the crappy part.

Yeah, I agree.  They should have given advanced warning.  Now, its kind of like they are holding your photos for ransom.

I was using photohostage, then went to tinypic, then went back to photohostage, so I guess now I will be "shopping around" again.  Kind of thinking of maybe Flicker, not sure yet.

I've only used Photobucket and have paid the "anti-pop up fee" which is modest, but adds no storage (sure runs faster without my anti-virus, anti-popup software fighting the Photobucket free account spam-o-matic generator). I've got 100s of photos on PB, and have posted the majority of them, so it'll suck major rocks if all of those links break wherever I've posted them.

For those that are thinking about using tinypic:

TinyPic is a photo and video sharing service, owned and operated by Photobucket.com,[2] that allows users to upload, link and share, images and videos on the Internet.

I dunno man..  seems selective.  Like if your account has excessive linkage they can tell?

They are doing it in stages.  Some guys were ok yesterday and not today.  I suspect tomorrow others will be affected.  It's going site-wide, so I suspect everyone will get hit at some point.  Maybe not, maybe it's only the more active users?  Who knows, but with the shenanigans they just pulled, what's to stop them from pulling the rug out from anyone else anytime in the future.

Imgur is da bomb.

Once you learn the ins and outs, it is the easiest and most versatile pic hosting site.

Just don't use it for sales purposes.   They'll axe ya.

Yeah...  Dont worry guys, all the important sticky pics will be hunted down in bucket, downloaded, then transferred to the sksfiles server for good.

Its all the regular posted pics from forum members in regular everyday threads that will take the hit.

Imgur sounds like a peachy bunch.

Quote
If someone else might own the copyright to it, don't upload it. Don't upload gore, "hate speech" (i.e. demeaning race, gender, age, religious or sexual orientation, etc.), or material that is threatening, harassing, defamatory, or that encourages violence or crime. Don't upload illegal content such as child porn or nonconsensual ("revenge") porn. Don't hotlink to adult content or to file-sharing, gambling, torrent, warez, or Imgur rip-off sites. Don't impersonate someone else. Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com. We mean it.

What the hell else would you use it for?!?!?      dash2

That does sound downright " I'm taking my ball and going home cuz I don't like you any more"

But.....I switched over from crapbucket to Imgur 'bout a 6-10 months ago and while I don't have time to post much, when I can it's easy as pie. All my newest pics have gone there and some older content. No problems with my old as dirt comp and systems.

I'm still working 14+ hour days so I'ma gonna hold off on moving pics around till yall good fellas figure out our best options. I do plan on digging out my pics from any posts I've done and re-doing so we wont have a bunch of PB screwed posts.

Reminds me of the multiple scenes from Airplane...." Man I picked the wrong day to quit Smoking"

If you're looking for just a basic service to host/link pics, Imgtc.com is another option. To much social media aspect to IMGUR for me, can do without all that crap just to link a pic.

Is there an option there that you could select to make your photo library private and not open to the public?

I know when I used "slushbucket" and tinypic, I had both of my libraries both private and the pics would still show up here.
I have since deleted all of my photos from "slushbucket" since they started their ransom tirad.

Thanks Pat, but we are good for sks-files 'owned' photos. We can serve them using a portion of the 10 GB disk space we are allocated when we purchase and renew our lease with our service provider. Currently we are paid up for the next couple years, so we are in good shape once I upload the photos and change the links in the various FAQ and HOWTO posts.

Ideally we would serve all the board photos locally instead of having to have everyone rely on third party hosting sites like photobucket or flikr. Unfortunately, there's no way that 10 GB would come close to doing that. We would need mamy TB (1000 GB) of space and that kind of disk space gets ridiculously pricey in a hurry.  Some of the very large boards do this (milsurps.com and gunboards I believe), but even with local hosting, when their databases get corrupted, things still can go south in a hurry.  There's no silver bullet I'm afraid. I think the Amazon prime thing or even Google photos might be a viable option for individual users, but everyone will have to decide what's best in their particular situation.  thumb1

Funny thing is it's not all users. I got hit, GM got hit, but P32 still has his up and working. I suspect they will eventually make things apply to all users the same way, but then again maybe not.  Maybe they just wanted to send a message to higher volume users?  I really don't know what the motivation is, but blocking some while allowing others in an arbitrary way sounds like a good way to get the gov't involved in your business practices.

The rumour from another site I frequent says that a free user will still be able to have their photos hosted on "slushbucket" but will not be able to link/host to them elsewhere.  While I understand that the hosting is free, why would someone want to do that if they are unable to link to them?  I have since removed all of my photos from there.

This site and the http://www.mauserguns.com/forum/index.php and https://www.ar15.com/index.html all need a third party picture hosting site.

I know its expensive but I just wanted to show who does and who does not host pictures directly in my world.

It came. I was surprised, then pissed. This has to be a form of extortion. I paid another years "fees" on June 05, 2017. Now they're saying "any member who's Plus acct. was in good standing on Jun 01, 2017 shall continue to receive all PB services that were avail. to them on such date, blah, blah, blah." (Which was the 3rd Part Hosting, of course. What else am I gonna put all these pics on there for?) And, BTW, since they changed me from monthly payments in May to yearly in June, there are NO REFUNDS ON FEES. So, pay up or shut up. This is BS! What the h*** do they think their site is for? I guess I've got a year to transfer all my pics to another site and cancel my Plus acct. auto-pay sub. They're losing a seven-year paying member for a four day lapse, er, loophole, per their "Terms".  Yeah, they're biting the hand that feeds them now.

FC, I'd suggest contacting your CC company and seeing if it's not too late to reverse the charge.  You are not receiving the service you paid for.  They will likely reimburse the cost and then possibly take it up themselves with PB.  I suspect you will get nowhere if you try to go direct to PB.  They are getting hammered on all sides, they will hunker down and refuse to cry uncle until their suppliers (the CC companies) put the squeeze on them...

Photobucket has added unlimited hosting to its Plus 500 Subscription plan at a competitive fixed price
.

$400 a year is competitive with who?!?!

I just watched a vid on youtube with this same azzmonkey CEO specifically stating that their bread/butter of what makes them so great bla bla hork spit was that for next to nothing or nothing, people can easily share their pics across the interweb.

So tell me Mr.CEO brain-child liar azz scumbag.....

What good is a photo site if you cannot share a darn thing anywhere (not even email)!?!?!
Where is 'my' email notification??    I didn't get one.
Why $400 a year which EVERYONE knows is an out-right insane figure to ask?...  Ill tell ya why all right.  ITS A SCAM!!    RansomBucket could have EASILY opted for an affordable option to maintain third party linking (say like $20 a year) and stayed in business... Perhaps took off like a rocket and restored their integrity (worlds worst spam-add site).  This enormous price hike has one purpose.... WHY NOT MAKE IT TO WHERE ALL UPLOADED PICS FROM NOW FORWARD CANNOT BE 3RD LINKED AND LEAVE THE ONES ALREADY LINKED TO ALONE?

#1  Extortion of the folks heavily invested in it and rely on it for business (ebay, etsy, a million of small mom/pop shops) who are actually willing to pay it and not sink until they can figure out something else.
#2  After cashing the ransom check, take their ball and close the door.

DO NOT PAY RANSOMBUCKET ONE RED DIME.....  ITS A SINKING SHIP WITH A DICATATOR ATTEMPTING A MASS CASH-IN BEFORE HEADING TO FIGI.

It's funny you mention that. I have been noticing more and more pop up ads and pop up pages while on photobucket in the past few months, and I was thinking to myself, they must be hurting for money.

The really sad part about it, is that it's going to REALLY mess the internet up. Decades worth of forums are going to be riddled with broken image links. Valuable information resource posts that people will search out, will be useless now because all the pics are dead.

What some company really needs to do, is somehow take over photobucket's control if they go under, and keep people's links alive.

Someone needs to start a forum spicific photo hosting deal for a set $ amount per year..... Where the forum pays for the service to have pics uploaded as attachments, and it uploads to the host account in question.

Let me ask a dumb question..... what do sites like Photobucket and other image hosting companies expect people to use their sites FOR? Like....what purpose would someone upload images to a photo hosting site, if they COULDN'T post those pictures online? Am I missing something here?

Your not missing anything.   I guess the only other purpose I think of is if your house burned down.  You can rest in relief that your pics are stored by a extortionist.

I suggest you guys look at imgbb....  You can make all the folders you want, it generates more links then you know what to do with, you can copy all links to all pics within a folder at once and paste, when you copy a link individually it auto adds the img tags when pasting, and there are several levels of public/privacy.

Actually sign up... Dont to the upload without signing up... That just gives you a one time link for that pic and you don't ever come back to it.  Sign up

They also have a SMF mod for the boards to utilize attachments... Have to look into

My main concern is the huge amounts of pictures I've got linked in forums all over the net over the past decade. It's not like I'm going to go back to a decade's worth of forum threads and edit all my picture links to work with a new host. And then, multiply that same issue by the tens of thousands (or even millions) of other photobucket users.

It wouldn't have been TOO bad if photobucket would have done something like $9.99 a month to be able to 3rd party link. That's reasonable to me, feasible for the average Joe to afford, and they would make MILLIONS of dollars with a deal like that.

But to go from free to $400 a year for the same ability? That's insane. They really need to rethink this.

A few screenshots from imgbb...  I one-click copied all these with img tags already added!  You can creat a folder, upload all the pics for say 1 gun, copy ALL BBcode img links at once.... Paste

There needs to be an app to remove photos from PB and recreate them elsewhere...for a small fee.

So far, it seems as if I have not been hit yet...when/if it comes...they can suck it.

I really wonder if they are actually getting this exorbitant sum from anyone? Did they think they would get more $400 clients than would save them by offering something realistic?  I bet their phone support people are thrilled with their jobs right now.

Any photo that I upload to a photo hosting site, I also keep a copy of it on my pc.  Therefore, I can delete/remove them from any hosting site and upload a copy of them to another site with no issue.

What bugs me is that since I altered most of my photos that happen to be in posts at an unscrupulous other board to say Justin Hell @ SKS-files. com will stop appearing to annoy them.  rofl2

Another thing that gets my goat is that same site also had a really good post from XXXSKS Joe regarding receiver cover scope mounts....lots of photos that will likely disappear forever.  I so wanted to steal that info and post it here, but I cannot remember the title of the post....if someone does, and if Joes photos werent absconded with yet....that would be a really good thing to try preserve.

Odd thing is, around the 4th or so, you could still follow the link to the PB main site and still be able to see (and grab) the photo.  Now, all you get is the "please update your account to enable 3rd party hosting" image, not the original image at all.

Also used to be that you could link the PB image and append an ~original at the end of the .jpg and it would show.  Both seem to have stopped working as of a couple days ago.

So I followed some links from Boomer34 (for those that remember him, he used to run the original Russian gunbroker threads at the 'other' boards way back when before he passed away).

Some photos are allowed through:

Some are simply gone:

Odd thing is they are in the same directory?  I'm certain boomer hasn't paid his fee before June 1st since he died in 2014.  Hell if I know.  I guess it is a totally different PB error than the "Pay us $400" photo.

I guess I should post some pics of the one SKS I have with the Spanish mount....it is really unique.  I have only seen mine and Joes....sucks that its gone, that was the only thread there I would refer to from time to time.

I suppose here, it is less of a devastation....that other place is now so full of holes, it will lose status...and hopefully this site will ultimately prevail...wouldn't that be neat?

I dunno, most every site that had a userbase heavily reliant on PB is hit with this one.  We are in much better shape because the FAQs, stickys, etc. are in excellent shape.  General run of the mill old posts are swiss cheese even here though.  Many of mine I can recreate as needed, just a matter of someone pointing out "hey, XYZ thread is missing your photos".   Then I can go in and relink them from a stable image hosting site.

SKSBoards is screwed as a good majority of their stuff was PB linked.  They will move forward with image hosting, but w/o current commentary on new SKS carbines that show up, they will, in essence, have a pre 7/1/17 and post 7/1/17 set of boards.  The pre boards will be useless for much of anything.  The post  boards will be great if you want to know how to fix your lawn tractor, not so sure what to expect if the noobs asks SKS questions though.  dance2

The real winners out of this whole thing will be SKSguide.  Those pages will not go poof from something as silly as this.  Should be good information for years to come.

PS  I bet PS has those photos on the thumb drive XXX gave him.  Sal, try searching for a file named Receivercoverscopemounts001.jpg  Don't assume those photos are gone forever w/o exploring a third or fourth option! :)

Ha! It's alive! It lives again! Well, I made my case to Photobucket and they apparently have turned my "3rd Party Hosting" capability back on, for who knows how long. I'll enjoy it as long as it lasts.

Kind of a funny thing.  :-[   I had written a very "exact" email to PB's "support" back on 07/10/2017 about the new "Terms of Use". I got an email from PB last night, (07/15/17), asking me "How would you rate the support you received?" It was the only thing I had heard back from them.  >:(  To say the least, it earned a return email that was somewhat "terse". I didn't know that they had turned it back on?! Oh well, they deserved most of what I said for causing all this confusion. We'll see if it lasts...

(That's me in the back window of that car, at 10 years old, peering out into my future. We were living in Allen Park, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. It was a nice place in '64. A few years later, it was all engulfed in the race riots. We were gone by then, though. My folks had bought that new 1964 Chysler New Yorker off the lot there in Detroit, where it had just been made. I think it had like 12 or 18 miles on the odometer. 6 years and a hundred thousand miles later, I was driving that car to school and work. It was a station wagon, but it was powered by a beast 413ci "Wedge" engine. I remember busting many a Mustang fan-boy's bubble with that old station wagon.  :))  I still can't believe my parents let me take a station wagon on dates.  :) :) ;)  The memories an old picture can bring back! My Mom and Dad, (including us kids, apparently) would drive over into Canada and buy meat because it was so much cheaper there, Dad would pack it under the hood, and return across the border, undeclared! Man, I was a criminal accomplice at a young age! And didn't know it until "I was old enough to know." I remember going across the border, but I had no idea of what was going on! They were trying to make ends meat, (pun intended), but I'm sure glad they didn't get caught.)

Sorry LC. I got busy researching something and just came up for air. Looking at the PB site, this is the address it goes to when I hit my PB icon. Everything has that s1043 or i1043 in front of it.

http://s1043.photobucket.com/user/firstchoice14/library/?sort=3&page=1

The smaller pic:

http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b436/firstchoice14/Private%20pics%20family%20events%20avatars/89thDivision-342ndFieldArtillery-TheRolling_W_DivisionorMiddleWestDivision_zps3c02515d.jpg

The email & IM, HTML, and IMG tabs all have the s1043. The Direct tab has the i1043. Hmmm...my images all work here and "other" places? When I click on any of the above links, I go directly to the site, or pic. What can I try?

I don't see any of you pics unless it's just the link with no tags and I click on it.   Something with that i1043 is not allowing img tags to display it in forum.  I bet you this is their way of saving bandwidth by 'allowing' them to be linked but not actually display them on third party sites.

That's messed up man.

Is there a way of taking the "private" off the individual pics, without making the whole album "public"? I don't understand this because my links havn't changed. I have checked many of my old posts, on various other sites. Nothing in the links have changed. My privacy setting have always been set like they are now. Obviously, something is different. Just trying to figure out what.

Okay, good to know. Thanks, spongemonkey! Yeah, PB likes their ads. I don't even notice them anymore. Well, I've got a year to figure this mess out. (maybe? we'll see) I think I'll be less apt to upload anything to PB now, though. If they're going to try to hit me for $400 next year, why waste the time uploading much else to them? I kinda doubt they'll be around that long, though. I think everything I've uploaded has been from my hard drive and It's all still there. I mean, what could happen?  fart1  At one point, I started backing up all the photos on my hard drive to PB. That's when I ran out of "free space" and became a paying member (Plus20). Now, I'm thinking my backup needs a backup plan.

Just a quick, final test. And then I'll shut up and go away.  :)

I used the "upload image to post" this time. Are these seen by everyone?

LC, I see something flashing by on that screen about signing up for an account and signing in? Is it something we need to do for use?

Edit:
Crap, I just looked back through this thread and answered my own question.

LC's quote:
I suggest you guys look at imgbb....  You can make all the folders you want, it generates more links then you know what to do with, you can copy all links to all pics within a folder at once and paste, when you copy a link individually it auto adds the img tags when pasting, and there are several levels of public/privacy.

Actually sign up... Dont to the upload without signing up... That just gives you a one time link for that pic and you don't ever come back to it.  Sign up

They also have a SMF mod for the boards to utilize attachments... Have to look into

You dont have to sign up, but I would. That way, you can organize your pics in folders etc and always be able to go back to them and get links and stuffs. If you are signed into imgbb when you use the 'upload image to post' option on the board, it will give you the option as to which folder to store it.  win win

Okay. I get it now. That little "sign up, log in" screen kinda flies by! I kept trying to hit that moving target, but couldn't!  rofl  Besplode  If I keep this up, I may become computer literate.  nea1

Good night, America! You too, Canada!

Dunno, haven't used them since they went full-retard.  I have all my photos sourced on my local hard drive, if I need it I just pull it off that and upload it to imgbb.  thumb1

I just signed up with imgbb and figured I would gather all of my stuff into one place...again....I have hard drives laying all over the place. My data is as cluttered as my garage.  :)
