M59 and M59/66 official rear sight use and zeroing
« on: December 13, 2017, 02:01:51 PM »
I will describe official rear sight use, as it is explained in Yugoslav People's Army M59/66 Field Manual. Numbers 1 to 10 are used for distances from 100 to 1000 meters (1 m = 1.093 yd). Rear "battle" notch has the same height as 300 meter notch and is used when there is no time for range adjustment. When using battle notch on targets up to 300 meters, POA should be in the middle of the target and when targets are at distances beyond 300 meters, POA should be on the top of the target. When engaging prone targets, POA should be at the bottom angle of the target.

Official Army zeroing was done this way: 4 rounds were shot at distance of 100 meters, using no. 3 sight notch. Target was 1 meter high and 0.5 meter wide (approx. 40 x 20 in) with black rectangle in the middle, measuring 25 x 20 centimeters (approx. 10 x 8 in). POA was in the middle of black rectangle's lower side with reference point in the middle of black rectangle's upper side. Rifle was considered zeroed if 3 of 4 rounds were inside 15 cm diameter (6 in), with centre of this three rounds not further than 5 cm (2 in) from reference point - middle of black rectangle's upper side.

Great information!

So for the 100m zeroing procedure with the 100cm high target, I'm trying to calculate the number of cms between the POA and the desired POI in your description. I'm envisioning a 25cm high rectangle in the center with 37.5cm high rectangles above and below that center rectangle. So POA is 18.75cm above the bottom of the target (center of the lower rectangle) and desired POI is 50cm from the bottom of the target (in the center of that center rectangle), which adds up as 18.75 + 12.5 = 31.25cm (12.3") between the POA and POI.

so very nice to see information like this....thank you!!
I want to make one of these targets, and get a metric roller thing to meter my distances rather than yards. I wonder if Canada has a Harbor Freight equal to get one. Mathematics make me grumpy.  rofl

thanks for sharing this. :)

I modified my description a little bit (English is not my first language, so please bare with me). Aim at the bottom of black rectangle and measure from top of the black rectangle. Shooting distance is 109 yards (=100m).

dang...quite a price increase vs harbor freight.  Maybe I will try squeeze some smart out of my phone and just use my SAE wheel....LOL  Sure would be neat if a sight leaf was a 922r compliance part...a yard based US made sight would be kinda neat...wouldn't want to be involved in trying to make it happen...but it would be neat.... with a US battle sight stamp....:P
