7.62x39 Ammo test
« on: April 25, 2019, 04:47:03 PM »
Did some ammo comparison testing with my Tula SKS.
Range was 100 meters holding bullseye on centre of target.
Russian Surplus vs Czech Surplus vs commercial jacketed soft points.
Not surprisingly the Russian ammo shot the best group at 3 inches.
The Czech’s must’ve been drunk when they made the batch of ammo I got  ...6 inch group !
The commercial JSP’s weren’t much better with 5.5 inch group.
I didn’t have any Chinese surplus with me today but I have found it to be on par with the Russian stuff for the most part.
Then just for the hell of it I shot a 40 round group rapid fire as fast as I could aim , fire and reload with Russian ammo.
The black circle is 8 inches in diameter, just goes to show that the sks is a very effective “minute of man” rifle.
Good thing my rifle likes the Russian ammo seeing as I now have over 1800 rounds of it !

Thanks for sharing the experience Garage161! The weather is getting better now in our area. I've gotten to the range a couple times this year, but I didn't go organized to document anything. Just plinking with my daughter and her boyfriend and such. Good to get out there, though.

Good shooting! We just had the outdoor pistol range available to us this last time. I was doing great with my Type 56, at 25 yards! Hey, it's fun to hit the black that many times when your eyesight is getting dimmer by the year! I went through a couple hundred rounds of x39 (Wolf) without any FTF.

You mentioned Czech surplus. What does the box look like on those? I'm trying to remember if I have any of that. The Russian surplus came in boxed in so many versions. I wish we could still get the Chinese surplus. It was decent, especially for the price.

Right on good to hear you’re getting better weather!
The Czech Surplus I have comes in a pale blue cardboard box of 20 rounds on two stripper clips. The rounds themselves have a grey coloured steel case.

Ah, the Czech boxes look familiar.  I'll have to look through my ammo boxes and check for Czech.

Compliments on your pictures. Good, clear quality. We do appreciate that!

Is it the Czech stripper clips that uses the BXN stamp?

When you decide you've got too many stripper clips, lets work out a deal.  thumb1
I could use 60 or thereabouts.

I only have 9 stripper clips myself , only bought 40 rounds of the Czech ammo.

Hey Garage161, if you've never tried any of the Yugoslavian m67, give it a whirl, if you get the chance. It is, without reservation, the finest military surplus ammo I've ever used, and for me, performs wonderfully in a wide variety of firearms. I've run it through Dracos, AKM and AK-47 variants, and many SKS rifles. Consistent, accurate, and brass-cased, to boot.

I picked up +/-  9K rounds of Serbian M67. That ammo is A+, number 1.

I have some cases of the M67. Metal cases with a wire to open through a lead seal. The wire looks to be something of a garrotte nightmare. The cases I have are the 1120rds. I believe that's the ones that are in 40rd boxes, on stripper clips? Is that correct?

I had already purchased individual 40rd. boxes of the M67 on the nice stripper clips. I didn't want to open the sealed cases due to the quality of the ammo. I think it's a mind game perpetrated by the gubmint.  :)

Yes, the 1120 round cases have stripper packed rounds in 28 individual 40 round boxes.

The 1260 round cases are loose rounds in 84 individual 15 round boxes.   thumb1

G161, I checked over mine - no markings on the clip itself. The package is most likely a re-do.

M67 hasn't been around for two years at least.  SGAmmo had the last that I saw and it was going for 40+ cents a round.  Far cry from the early 2000's when it was the 'corrosive' (hence inferior) ammo and could be had for 2/3 the price of new mfgr steel cased ammo...

Yep. Wish I'd bought more when I had the chance. As is, I've stacked cases of both strippered and non-strippered M67, and any of the lots I've used always works the same. If anyone brings more in, I'd advise all who may visit this thread to not think twice-just get it.
