I was given a, you know about these things, can you figure out why it doesnt extract? Weekend project.

So, after pounding the piston out of the gas tube i have concluded Someone went to the store, brought an SKS and ATI stock, never cleaned the cosmoline out, shot it and never cleaned it and now here we are.
Interesting bits,
No date receiver cover with refurb stamp.
No marking on the side other than serial.
All the usual soviet proof and inspector marks.

What does the gas tube takedown lever look like?  From what i see, this gun is a '53 to '55 gun with a replaced and restamped S/N.  We can narrow it to '53-'54 or '54-'55 with that last data point.

Scold your pal for not properly cleaning!  Slamfires are nothing to take lightly.

This is just a see whats wrong and give it back thing, and it goes through 3 people or more, I dont know who it actually belongs to.
I thought pounding the stuck case out with a mosin rod would work, but nope.  Any suggestions?

I would soak muzzle end up with BP Blaster for a day.... Then hydro press it out with a dowel rod and hammer.

I assume, the chamber is rusty too.  I really had a struggle getting the gas piston free from the tube so i don't think it was even cycling.
When they said it didn't extract, i was thinking extractor problems, cruddy cosmoline that was never cleaned out, not this.

Well the shell is out, just as easy as you said it was.
It seems the chamber is a little rusty and that was holding the shell tight.
My next question is, what are the best ways to fix that and the rusty gas tube that doesn't let the piston go back enough?

Chuck a shotgun brush with one or two cleaning rod sections into a drill for the chamber....depending on just how bad the gas tube is, you might need to replace that....otherwise use appropriate sized brushes for each section of tube and do the same....

If the piston head is not overly pitted, it should clean up with some scrubbing....if the pitting is too deep on the shaft to allow for free travel, the piston probably has to be replaced too.

I would start with a good bore cleaner of your choice, and if needed perhaps step up to some acid to remove as much rust as you can.  Watch the acid around any bluing you would like to retain though.

Rechamber it for .458 WM?  Wait, only Garand owners fall for that.  I'd suggest a dremel with a brass brush?
