Different Arisaka with mum
« on: March 24, 2015, 05:42:09 PM »
I was asking this old-timer from work what he knew about Arisakas.  He says "I have 7 or 8 of them" and decided to bring one in to show me.  It seems to be in really nice shape, no aircraft wings on rear leaf, stock seemed refinished, and some paint on the stock.  Here are the pics:

He offered to take some .223 and pmags as trade.
***This is not the same rifle with the bullet lodged in the stock that I mentioned on a previous post***
Any thoughts on the paint?

That's a school/training rifle. I've seen all sorts of weird crap stamped and painted onto the rifles that were removed from service, as yours was, so it could be legit.

I thought it looked familiar. That's your basic katakana "ku".

Oh hell...let me try to not screw this up. Japanese is so strange to me. Any time you see Japanese writing, it is expressed in a combination of kanji, hiragana and/or katakana. The katakana is the closest thing they have to an actual alphabet, in the sense that we know it. So he basically has a big "K" painted on his stock.

You can see where the Japanese have adopted our westernized Arabic numbering too. They used Kanji "38" for Type 38 on the receiver but also our numbers for serializing the gun.

Thanks for the translation!  Is the painted/marked stocks uncommon?  Also, it looks like someone polyurethaned the stock, was that typical of the painted stocks?

Thanks,

John Galt

The painted  encircled  character  is actually  the katakana  "ke". It's  sometimes  found on T38's  removed from service  and used for training like  the op's. While  it's  most  likely  an abbreviation for something  that something  remains a mystery. There are some Type  30 bayonets  with the encircled "ke" branded into one of the grip panels as well. Also there  are a group of  6th series  T99's with the same encircled  "ke" painted  on the stocks. Fun stuff!
