Title: My Finn M91
Post by: Cz315 on January 01, 2021, 01:13:29 PM
So I got myself a Mosin off Gray Blanket. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/885056315

Had I done some reading on the seller beforehand I might have not bid on it, but here we are. He surely generates some controversy. I'm actually quite happy with a rifle (apart from the price I paid, damn those evenings on the phone...). Pristine bore, nice Finnish trigger and no rust issues apart from a badly pitted cleaning rod. I originally thought it might be a Westinghouse stock, but I'm not so sure anymore. The bolt is Finned together - Tula+Izhevsk+Westinghouse cocking piece. There are some markings on the tang that might look like a Westinghouse, I'm not sure. I need to take it apart. Here are some more pics I could use some help with. The 7 on the bolt and on the stock match - pretty cool, but probably accidental. There is also a faint symbol above the 31 on the stock. In the beginning I wasn't even sure it's real but I think it is. Kind looks like a variation of the Tula hammer. Finally, I have a stupid question. I know the barrel bands on those are left threaded. What about the screws in the stock that fix them? Any word of advice on removing those, they seem quite flimsy. I figured I'd ask before doing something stupid.

Nice Tikka!  thumb1

That's a recycled Russian birch stock. The NEW and Remington M91 stocks were made of walnut as were a few Finnish stocks, see example in the link:

Matching 7s are definitely coincidental. The small wood screws to keep the barrel bands from moving forward under recoil are RH threaded and should be tightened very gently.

Feel free to post more pictures of your M91. The GunBroker pictures are ephemeral.

Here is the promised gun porn. Sorry about the light in my shop. I really need to buy some nice LEDs, so it's less of a dark cave.

Very nice looking Tikka! Thanks for the pictures, it'll definitely make this post more useful as the Gunbroker listing disappears!

Nice M91... I actually like them almost better than the Fin 91/30.  Let us know how she groups.

Will do. Once it gets warmer  ;) My expectations are very high. The bore and crown look really good. I can't imagine this thing seeing much action.

In the meantime I finally took it apart. BTW, the stock seems to be of the older variety, it has holes for barrel band pins. The tang has a 'B', few other marking on the receiver, N in a circle, etc. Any ideas what they mean? Lots of Finnish shims - my expectations of accuracy are getting higher and higher. I don't think I'll be taking apart it regularly, those screws and bands were a pain to remove.  The band is Remington (?), the front one is Tula.

Didn’t notice any but I have to admit I wasn’t really looking there...
