Need help identifying mystery spam can
« on: December 08, 2024, 10:40:46 PM »
The spam can is at the local auction house, but has absolutely no markings on it. The Cannes itself is shaped kind of odd and has a little bit of OD paint on it. Was wondering if anybody here could help me identify it due to the shape of its lid and other parts, thank you

Well, I've never seen one like that in 7.62x39 in any flavor, 7.62x54r, 9mm, 7.62x51 NATO, 7.62x25, or 5.45x39, nor 8mm. Then again, there's a lot of spam cans I haven't seen.
I would take a look at what firearms are in the auction that might help in narrowing the field.
My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

My guess is older Soviet 7.62x54R, but it’s a bit of a WAG. Soviet paint color. Typical size for 880 round cans of x54, but not a typical can opening style for the USSR, so I’m uncertain.

If it were me I’d happily gamble up to 200 USD (with premium). I have guns in all Warsaw Pact small arms calibers, so I could use anything it turned out to be.

To be honest you may get a better, quicker answer over on Gunboards. Larger and more diverse membership. Could be Japanese maybe??? Or what about Carcano?

I think I would pony up a couple benjamins too.  That's a really neat find and one of those easter eggs that will be a joy to open.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's Chinese 7.62x39.  Looks just like these ones with the bezel on the lid, remnants of green paint/sealer, lack of markings, and the side opening metal ribbon: https://ctfirearmsauction.com/auction_item/chinese-spam-cans-ammo-7-62x39-2/

Here's another as well:

Good research RM, certainly looks to be just that. Not one I've seen before for sure.
