Just a copy, Pietta 1860 Army
« on: October 25, 2024, 03:08:50 PM »
Sad to see this section so quiet. I recently got into this hobby simply because my dad and my brother John were heavily into percussion and I loved the smell of burning black powder in the air when I was a child. I recently bought an 1860 Pietta new. My brother was a character. Living in Montata, he would carry a Colt Walker, open carry and a very big Randall double edge toothpick style dagger on his hips. The Walker was carried in a confederate cavalry holster. I think he wanted to be Josey Wales and was always playing that board game Mosby's Raiders. rofl He had quite a few I want to eventually get. The Walker (Although I would prefer a dragoon 3rd model), 2 1851 36 Navy's, a 31 wells fargo, a 31 remington pocket, and one of those 1 shot 31 vest pocket derringers.

For now I have this Pietta. Next i think I want one of those Remington 44 sheriffs or the 36 model. Both have shorter barrels than the 58 Army's. I got a mold,I cast the balls in the pics. Some of them came out a little frosted but I think I did alright for my first load of cast rounds. I need to get myself a Lee furnace for lead, did these on the stove top in an old saucepan and it was not exactly easy doing it like that with one of those pouring ladles and the mold.

Recently got into the hobby myself after scoring 1860 Army and 1851 Reb Navy Piettas in .44 with a copper flask for less than the cost of either pistol. They had never been fired, but that is no longer the case.

Love shooting cap & ball pistols now! The huge fan gets a good workout at my range when they go with me.

They are a lot of fun. No waiting periods, and if you dig around places like dixie gun works and a few other places , they offer a lot of models you don't find everywhere else.

I love some black powder... their more fun then even my Desert Eagles.... Own 2 Pietta revolvers and 2 CVA brass frames, and a licensed...Colt Dragoon.. Only difference in a Dragoon and Walker, the Walker holds 60grains max load, the Dragoon is a 50grain max load. The 60grain loads were a bit much for the pistols mechanicals back then, which is why the Dragoon was developed and used to replace the Walker. Fully loaded even at 50grains, and weighing just over 4 pounds, it will rock you when you touch it off.

This one I bought from a trip up the road to Taylor and Co. in Winchester VA, it's a 45 and can convert to 45LC cartridges as well with a cylinder change, this one actually got me, being I purchased the .45 LC cylinder and pistol together, it required a 4473. Now, had I brought one or the other.. left and came back and purchased the other.. No form would have been needed. Live and learn  rofl2

This sweet stubby little number is also a Taylor and Co, this one has been tuned in their shop, a case hardened frame .44.

The two CVA brass frames, a .36 Navy, a .44 long barrel and the Colt Dragoon, and the Dragoon presentation box. I believe the reproduction Dragoon and Walkers now are made by Pietta.

I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

I said I was an addict........I didn't say I had a problem

Found by a friend of a friend buried in his yard for at least the last 10 years. Made in 2007 and restored by me as best I could for what he had to invest.

Absolutely serious!

The bore has some pitting that does not look too bad after working it with a piece of Big45 pad wrapped around a bore brush for a couple of hours.
